MSc Innovation, Creativity and Enterprise

The Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE) MSc explores the strategies and business processes that promote innovation and creativity in organisations, including the fundamentals of enterprise development and entrepreneurship. It is designed to meet the needs of knowledge-based, entrepreneurial and innovation-driven economies worldwide.

Employers are increasingly looking to recruit enterprising and creative individuals - this programme looks to produces graduates who aspire to strategic roles within the private and public sectors and who can lead these organisations through innovative change.

The programme benefits from strong links to the University’s Careers Service (which supports entrepreneurial activity among the University's student body), as well as strong links with industry and experienced entrepreneurs. The programme provides students with a setting to start-up a business and to engage on real projects with local/regional stakeholders.

More specifically, the programme provides opportunities for students to develop an advanced understanding of:

  • the social, political, economic and global business contexts within which innovation and creativity are managed
  • current research on the enterprising management of innovation and creativity within specific industries or technology clusters
  • the leadership requirements for developing new enterprises and leading organisational transformation

Who is the programme for?

This programme is suitable for students from either a science or arts background. It is aimed at students who intend to seek roles in organisations where innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship are defining features and can include innovation consultancy, product development and management and business support. It is also aimed at those who want a postgraduate management education that will prepare them to start their own business.

Professional skill development

On a professional level, students will:

  • develop strategic, creative, and critical-thinking skills
  • act autonomously in planning and implementing research projects to a professional standard
  • learn and deploy professional communication skills - including written, oral and presentation skills


The programme is modular in structure, comprising 180 credits, which are studied on a full-time (12 months) basis. All students will undertake the following compulsory modules:

  • Semester one:
    • Understanding organisations (10 credits)
    • Understanding and managing creativity (20 credits)
    • Technology change and innovation management (10 credits)
  • Modules taught in semester one and semester two:
    • Business enterprise for postgraduate students (20 credits)
    • Research methods (20 credits)
  • Semester two:
    • Business enterprise policy (10 credits)
    • Enterprise and entrepreneurship management: A critical exploration (10 credits)
    • Managing design and product development (10 credits)
    • Open innovation and business clusters (10 credits)
  • Semester three:
    • The ICE dissertation (60 credits)

Modules will be offered subject to availability.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to hold a minimum upper second class first degree (2:1) or international equivalent. Every application is considered on an individual basis and applicants who narrowly miss the academic entry criteria may be eligible for admission at the discretion of the selector.

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with a minimum of 6.0 in all sub-scores. Pre-sessional courses in English language are provided by the University if required and successful completion of these may be a condition of entry.
