Program Description

MSc Financial Economics: Banking (full-time)

Maastricht University, School of Business and Economics

MSc Financial Economics: Banking (full-time)

Banking isn’t just about high-street banks and credit cards. It’s also about investment banking, risk management for financial institutions, derivatives, the effects of monetary policy return on financial assets and their relationship to macroeconomic developments. The Banking track will cover all this and more, giving you the best start to your future career.

What will you learn?

Banking is about making the best financial decisions for your customers. So knowing your customers’ needs and forming relationships with them is the first step towards doing this. Only then will you be able to put into practice the quantitative and decision-making skills you will learn during your studies.

At the end of the track, you will be able to:

• make sound, educated decisions, and recommendations about financial structures,
• add value to your customers by knowing their business,
• demonstrate in-depth knowledge of (quantitative) techniques in risk management and derivatives.

Career prospects

Banking graduates are in short supply so demand is high in the employment market. The financial institutions' sector is growing rapidly, especially in Europe, so job opportunities in the Netherlands, Germany and many other countries are numerous. Links with a network of international companies are already strong. Companies such as Fortis, ABP Pension Fund and Alex Beleggersbank sponsor professorships in the department.

Graduates have found positions in:

  • investment banking – advising companies how to manage their finances,
  • management of share issues and bond issues,
  • research departments of banks – using quantitative techniques,
  • risk management – involved in granting loans to larger companies and hedge funds.
This school offers programs in:
