This 12-month course gives you the opportunity to obtain the skills required to develop and commercialise new technologies in electrical and electronic engineering.

This course brings together the strengths and resources of both the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Nottingham University Business School.

As you will have the invaluable chance to experience the steps necessary to commercialise a technical idea, this programme provides an excellent basis for those engineers who wish to commercialise their ideas or graduates who wish to explore the exciting world of commercialisation.

Course details

This is a highly flexible course – particularly in terms of the engineering content – and this gives you the opportunity to choose modules according to your specific interests and requirements, and to carry out your studies in any of the internationally renowned research groups with theDepartment of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Course content

You will undertake a major piece of commercialisation work on an advanced technical topic, which you will complete over the summer under the supervision of specialists from theDepartment of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Nottingham University Business School.

We will provide you with advice and guidance while you refine and enhance your business strategy and literature review, whilst offering close supervision and support as you complete your dissertation.

Learning outcomes

You will be taught using the latest advances in teaching methods and electronic resources, as well as small-group and individual tuition from both the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Nottingham University Business School.

Our objective is to help you develop the confidence to work as a professional engineer, at ease with the conventions of both engineering and business disciplines. We aim to prepare you to tackle many areas of commercialisation within the field of electrical and electronic engineering.


Core modules

  • Entrepreneurship and Creativity (autumn): 20 credits
  • Launching New Ventures (autumn): 20 credits
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology Transfer Project(full-year): 60 credits

Optional modules

Students must select 20 credits in the spring semester from those offered by the Business School:

  • Entrepreneurship in Context (spring): 20 credits
  • Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation (spring): 20 credits

Students must take 60 credits from the group below, from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering:

  • Advanced Control System Design with Project(autumn): 20 credits
  • Digital Signal Processing for Telecommunications, Multimedia and Instrumentation(autumn): 10 credits
  • Instrumentation and Measurement with Project(autumn): 20 credits
  • Bioelectronic and Biophotonic Interfacing(autumn): 10 credits
  • Power Networks(autumn): 10 credits
  • Mobile Communications(spring): 10 credits
  • Power Systems for Aerospace, Marine and Automotive Applications(spring):10 credits
  • Advanced AC Drives with Project(spring): 20 credits
  • Technologies for the Hydrogen Transport Economy(spring): 10 credits

The very nature of this course means that you will be well equipped to enter the exciting world of commercialisation or to launch your own business or develop and market your own project.

Students of this course have entered into roles in design and development within major international companies or government agencies, obtained consultancy posts with leading contract consultant companies and moved into successful academic careers.

Average starting salary and career progression

In 2016, 94.2% of postgraduates in the faculty who were available for employment had secured work or further study within six months of graduation. The average starting salary was £31,959 with the highest being £100,000.

  • Entry requirements: 2.1 (Upper 2nd class Hons degree or international equivalent)
  • Other requirements: Engineering.
  • IELTS: 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element)
