Program Description

Our course is for engineers who want to develop their knowledge further and specialise in automotive engineering and technologies. Exploring research and development in this sector, your studies will focus on the design, performance and operation of automotive powertrains and vehicle systems. You’ll build on your existing engineering skills and apply them to the challenges of the automotive industry.

You’ll look in-depth at developments in low-carbon and sustainable powertrain and propulsion systems and the future technologies of vehicles. The industry needs innovative engineers who can create the next generation of vehicles, and this course is geared specifically towards equipping you with those skills. You’ll learn how to develop sustainable solutions for the vehicles we build and the processes we use.

From downsizing internal combustion engines and turbo-charging small engines to alternative fuels, hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles, our course draws on the University's specialist automotive research activities. You’ll learn from academics with expertise in automotive engineering and low-carbon technologies. Their industrial collaborations and research activity feed into your teaching and learning experience.

Use specialist facilities

Our facilities include a range of specialist automotive equipment including a chassis dynamometer, engine research platforms, transmission research and emissions measurement facilities. You could use these a part of your research dissertation project. You’ll also have access to control, simulation and rapid prototyping equipment.

Entry requirements

Academic qualifications

  • You should have a bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent, typically a high 2:2 or above.
  • To apply for this course, you should have an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering or vehicle engineering.
  • We may make an offer based on a lower grade if you can provide evidence of your suitability for the degree.
  • If your first language is not English but within the last 2 years you completed your degree in the UK you may be exempt from our English language requirements.

English language requirements

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in all components
  • The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 62 with no less than 59 in any element
  • TOEFL IBT: 90 overall with a minimum 21 in all 4 components

If you need to improve your English language skills before starting your studies, you may be able to take a pre-sessional course to reach the required level.
