Program Description

The programme aims to provide an intellectual setting within which students can both develop a fuller appreciation of substantive areas of applied psychology and improve their practical and analytical skills. The programme aims to provide a learning environment within which the successful student will:

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of key areas of Applied Psychology (e.g. Education, Health, Neuropsychology, Counselling, Business and Psychotherapy)
  • Develop core practical/research skills broadly relevant across a number of areas within Applied Psychology
  • Gain knowledge and critical understanding of the various research techniques and statistical methods that may be viewed as appropriate to a postgraduate level training in psychology
  • Gain experience developing practical research, analytical and reporting skills working either as a member of a team or individually.
  • Make an appropriate contribution to research within an area of Applied Psychology (applies to those completing the MSc).

Students who are obliged to terminate their studies before completing sufficient credits for the award of Post Graduate Diploma Applied Psychology may apply for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate.

The minimum requirement is 60 graded credits which must include the Research Methods in Applied Psychology module. The award of PGCert is a generic award and will not have Applied Psychology in the title.

Modules

MSc Applied Psychology
For this award the following modules must be successfully completed:

  • Research Methods in Applied Psychology
  • Applied Neuropsychology in Education
  • Contemporary Research and Issues in Applied Psychology
  • Counselling and Psychotherapy in Applied Psychology
  • Applied Business Psychology
  • Advanced Dissertation in Applied Psychology

Post Graduate Diploma Applied Psychology
This is an exit award. PGDip.in Applied Psychology is awarded for successful completion of 120 credits across taught modules.

Post Graduate Certificate
Students who are obliged to terminate their studies before completing sufficient credits for the award of Post Graduate Diploma Applied Psychology apply for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate.

There are strong employment prospects for Psychology graduates and salaries in this field are excellent. The range of professional skills that psychology graduates develop ensures that they are highly valued across the economy.

This programme is ideally suited to those who may intend to practise in Mauritius or outside or who may extend their research interests to doctoral level or work in local and central government agencies. After completion of the master's programme, students may work in health services, public health organisations, and academia.
