- Address the implications of earthquakes and ground challenges
It is suitable for candidates with an undergraduate degree qualification looking to strengthen their technical knowledge and improve their career potential in the sector.
Professional accreditation
This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM: The Institution of Civil Engineers, The Institution of Structural Engineers, The Institution of Highway Engineers and The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation) as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng(Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree.
Admissions
Curriculum
You will be taught by research-active staff, ensuring you are taught the latest theory and practice. It also means you’ll have opportunities to work on ongoing research projects.
You will practice by developing designs for real projects. In the design project module, you will be guided throughout by our Industrial Royal Academy of Engineering visiting professor from Arup.
The programme is supported by our strong industry links. The School of Engineering has an Industry Advisory Board, made up of representatives from leading organisations in the engineering sector, which informs curriculum development and research. Several members of the board deliver lectures, provide site visits, and mentor and potentially employ our students.
What you will study
The programme is intended to provide students with advanced theoretical knowledge, concepts and skills necessary for original thought and problem analysis related to civil and structural engineering.
Please note that for 2020 entry, the module information is subject to change.

Study support
You’ll be joining a relatively small cohort of students in which everyone is valued and looked after by members of staff, who maintain an open door policy. You will receive tailored advice and support to ensure you get the most from your studies.
We have a very active student-led Civil Engineering Society (CivSoc) which provides a non-academic platform for interaction between students and academics, industrialists and professional institutions. CivSoc organises a range of talks, site visits and tournaments every year.
We have a commitment to strong pastoral care for all of our students, which includes a Personal Tutor for all students, regular contact hours for tutor groups and our supportive student service teams who are always ready to help with any questions and provide the advice that you need.
In addition to standard study support through taught sessions, our Virtual Learning Environment allows students to access resources, participate in group work and submit work from anywhere in the world 24/7.
University central services are rich with support teams to assist students in every aspect of their journey through our degree programmes. From our Career and Employability Service, through our strong Students' Union, to our professional and efficient Student Finance team, there are always friendly faces ready to support you and provide you with the answers that you need.
Research
The teaching of modules is well-aligned with the research expertise of staff, ensuring you'll learn the latest theory, innovations and industry best practice.
Students have opportunities to work with our research teams - in particular for your MSc dissertation.
Career Opportunities
Career support
The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies.
Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans by exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes, there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.
Career prospects
Civil Engineers are key players in both developed and developing nations. They plan, design, operate and maintain our sustainable infrastructures. Sustainable use of materials, resources, and energy, in order to enhance the quality of life, for current and future generations, is a key aim for civil and structural engineers.
Those in this field increasingly need to build on their Bachelor degree qualification and increase their knowledge base to remain competitive. This programme is designed to give you this competitive edge.
Graduates are equipped to enter a wide range of industries such as consulting or contracting, construction, utility providers (such as the water, gas, or electricity companies), the railways, and many other fields.
