The world economy has been undergoing a rapid transformation from a capital-intensive age to a knowledge-based age. The entire Asia-Pacific region is endeavoring to nurture businesses to meet the challenges of this transformation. Joining the Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics as a postgraduate student gives you the opportunity to gain a comprehensive grasp of both technological and managerial aspects of contemporary issues in this field and to make a contribution to progress in driving the world forward by improving technology management and operations management.

Industrial engineers are uniquely trained from the total system perspective to practice as system integrators, cross-functional trainers, and change facilitators. In addition to engineering training, Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management (IELM) also emphasizes strategic issues, integration, and customer-orientation.

The MPhil focuses on strengthening students’ knowledge in their chosen area of concentration, and training for engineering research and development. The programme is highly suited to individuals who aspire to take a leading technical role in high value-added business organizations.

Research Foci

The Department covers two main research areas:

Design and manufacturing systems

Product and service design, quality management, human factors and ergonomics, biomechanics and cognitive decisions, and service system engineering.

Logistics management and Operations Management

Logistics and supply chain management, dynamic pricing and revenue management, operations research and stochastic modelling, financial engineering and risk management, and service operations management.

Energy Technology Concentration

Energy has been considered a core research area within the broadly-based disciplines of environmental science and technology. It is one of the most salient emerging disciplines amongst many in the fields of engineering, science, and social science. Energy Technology research covers many areas, including sustainable technology, conventional technology, and energy efficiency and conservation. The interdisciplinary postgraduate research programme in Energy Technology in the School of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology provides long-term support to our ongoing educational training and fast-developing research in technology in general.

Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of Energy Technology, research and training in the field are integrated with different disciplines so that students can be equipped with the necessary knowledge and experience.
