All graduates will attain at least an advanced-high level proficiency in the four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) according to the standards set by the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Graduates will acquire cross-cultural competencies that will serve them in a variety of career options, including education, business, and public service.
Graduate work in music is designed to provide advanced professional training. The Master of Music in Music Education degree program provides advanced study of music teaching in elementary and secondary schools and professional preparation for those who already possess initial certification. Other Master of Music concentrations provide specialized study in performance, conducting, and music theory. Graduate Assistantships are available in all areas and are awarded based on merit. For theory, a score of 75% or better on the UCA music theory entrance exam is required. For performance and conducting areas, an audition with area faculty is required. For conducting and education areas, a taped performance of the applicant’s ensemble is required.
The Master of Arts (MA) in mathematics education features mathematics courses developed to increase the mathematical content knowledge of secondary teachers and prepare candidates for teaching in the community college or pursuing further graduate studies. The program is designed so that a teacher can complete the required courses by attending two consecutive summers and enrolling in evening courses during the intermittent fall and spring semesters or by attending full-time for a year including both summer terms. For those candidates considering more advanced graduate studies, a thesis option is also available to expose candidates to research methods in mathematics education.

The Master’s in English program at UCA boasts stellar faculty, three tracks for completing the degree, unique opportunities beyond the classroom (graduate assistantships, internships, etc.), and a small program with a high faculty-to-student ratio. The Master of Fine Arts in Digital Filmmaking is a three-year, 60 credit hour terminal degree. Upon completion of the MFA program, graduates will be fully qualified to teach at the university level or compete in the ever changing landscape of the motion picture industry. The program emphasizes production skills through both a series of production seminars and the thesis project. In addition, students are required to take courses in writing, history, and theory in order to create a more well-rounded education. Students are expected to enroll full time and take nine credits a semester. Students complete two years of full-time coursework. In their third year, students write, direct, produce, and edit a thesis film (approximately 30 minutes).
Our goal is to provide graduate students the opportunity to concentrate on the study, practice, and teaching of Creative Writing in a highly focused writing program taught primarily by writers for writers. At 60 hours, this three-year program will ensure that graduates build multi-genre backgrounds in the popular discipline of Creative Writing through workshops, forms courses, topics courses, a wide variety of electives, and specialized teaching and editing practicums.
The Master of Arts degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) includes the four courses prescribed by the Arkansas Department of Education for ESL endorsement within a flexible degree program. The MA in TESOL can enhance the credentials of K-12 teachers, prepare students for careers in post-secondary teaching in the United States or overseas, and serve as a foundation for doctoral-level studies.
