The Master of Arts degree in Public History is intended to meet the educational needs of those aspiring to professional advancement in the field of public history. The curriculum in history and public history provides a sound basis to: deepen students’ knowledge of history and public history, and to expand their critical thinking skills; provide students with opportunities for extensive fieldwork and collaborative community projects as they complete their coursework, while also providing experience in their chosen area of study through the internship requirement; prepare students for careers in historic preservation and historical administration, including positions in archives, museums, state historic preservation offices, and cultural resource management firms, and for advancement in job preparation and salary for public history professionals. The Master of Arts in Public History is organized into two tracks, historical administration and historic preservation. The program offers two options within the two tracks: thesis and non-thesis. Department historian L. D. ([Paul] Lawrence Dunbar) Reddick became, in the words of Dr. King, the “historian of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.” English faculty Jo Ann Robinson and Mary Fair Burks founded in 1946 the Women’s Political Caucus, the lead organization in the 1955-1956 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Master of Arts in Economics

The Economics master’s program provides students with the knowledge required for entry-level or mid-level positions conducting economic analysis and forecasting within industry or government. Courses are selected to allow students to be well prepared for these as well as related alternatives. Students pursue the master’s degree by following one of three different tracks. Each track is designed with a different objective, though the choice of one over the other does not close any option the student may later want to pursue. Markets may rise and fall, but our graduates remain ahead.

Structure

Track I prepares the student for a doctoral program. It mirrors the first year of courses for the Ph.D. in Economics. Students have the ability to proceed into the Ph.D. program upon completion of the requirements for the master's degree. Alternatively, this track is excellent preparation for study in doctoral programs at other universities. This degree program requires 30 hours of coursework.Track II is for students who want to prepare for a career for which they apply the skills of economic analysis.
