The MA Program in Sociology of Contemporary Societies is a two-year English-language Master’s program designed for students interested in gaining in-depth knowledge of the state of the present-day field of sociology and social anthropology, including their theory and research methods. It features a strong core of sociology and social anthropological courses in three specializations: 1. Civil Society and Politics; 2. Anthropology of Space and Mobility; 3. Identities, Health, and Bodies. The Civil Society and Politics specialization provide students with a deep understanding of how contemporary complex societies work. Students acquire theoretical and practical skills in political sociology, anthropology of nationalism, and the non-profit sector. They will learn to analyze various aspects of public life systematically. The Anthropology of Space and Mobility specialization brings in-depth knowledge of the globalized world, its dynamics, migratory movements, social mobility, and enables these phenomena to be deeply understood, and applied in the field of urban planning, migratory politics, and analyzing global developments. The Identities, Health, and Bodies specialization develop the profound knowledge and practical skills required to conduct sociological and social anthropological research in the field of medical anthropology, health sociology, lifestyle studies, sociology of sport, and gender studies. In all specializations, students can choose either to focus on quantitative or qualitative research methodology. All specializations provide prerequisites for their graduates to be employed in the education sector, state and public administration, the non-profit sector, and corporate organizations. In addition to preparing for an out-of-academic deployment, this study creates the preconditions for an academic career and postgraduate studies. -

The aim of Historical Sociological research is the study of issues of long-term social processes and trends that have a significant impact on contemporary societies and phenomena. The M.A. Historical Sociology cultivates research activities and the education of experts with an emphasis on the specialization of these processes. Above all, historical sociology deals with problems of modernization and social change, globalization trends and influences, integration and disintegration processes, the relationship of continuity and discontinuity, religious and cultural pluralism, linking the global to the local, the identification of the chances and risks of social development, the analysis of conflict situations and the possibility of overcoming them. The need for understanding all of these issues invokes the need for the development of adequate theoretical and methodological approaches, and also of the specific training of university students, which is possible through the study of Historical Sociology. The study program is realized without specialization. -

Gender Studies at the Faculty of Humanities at Charles University in Prague (FHS UK) offers the opportunity for a systematic and interdisciplinary academic study of theoretical and methodological tools for researching and exploring gender issues from a historical perspective, with a consideration of cultural and ethnic aspects of any given topic. Gender studies apply intersectional and interdisciplinary perspectives on gender as one of the basic principles organizing human society and culture. Gender studies focus on the analysis of historical as well as contemporary manifestations of the gender order, the influence of feminist and queer theories and methods in science and research, and other aspects of gender order; they also probe the relationship between gender and other categories of social differentiation and stratification such as race/ethnicity, social status, age, sexuality, and/or disability. One of the specific strengths and an internationally recognized expertise of the gender studies program at the School of Humanities is the emphasis put on analysis and reflection of post-socialist experiences and reflections of gender structuring of the late-socialist Czechoslovak society, and “East European” societies in general. The study program is realized without specialization. -
