The two-year language pathway is directed at students who want to engage with South East Asia in a professional as well as academic way, as the intensive language module would enable them to reach a good level of proficiency in one of the four languages; Burmese, Indonesian, Thai or Vietnamese. The summer between the first and second year of study is spent in the region following an intensive language module. In the two-year pathway, students can take intensive South East Asian language with either MA South East Asian Studies, MA History, MA Religions of Asian and Africa, MA Medical Anthropology, MA Anthropological Research Methods, MA Migration and Diaspora Studies. -

The programme has three pathways in Ethnomusicology, Development and Performance, tailored for musicians and musicologists, anthropologists and development practitioners, teachers and composers, as well as those dedicated to developing an in-depth knowledge of a specific music tradition. You will study with a world-leading group of ethnomusicologists who are all experts in the musical traditions of Africa and Asia. You will be part of a thriving culture of performance, research and active engagement with music around the globe. The programme will suit those looking for a springboard into further research or employment in a range of music-related fields including journalism, industry, NGOs and education, and often serves as a conversion route for those trained predominantly in western music traditions. Informed by feminist approaches to knowledge production, International Relations, International Law, conflict resolution, peace-building, political participation, human rights, development and society the programme encompasses micro, meso and macro levels of analysis. This unique interdisciplinary programme offers critical grounded knowledge of gender and sexuality in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, with a focus on the nexus between gender, sexuality and social, political and economic change and development. The degree prepares students for jobs in government agencies, non-governmental organisations, UN bodies and international organisations. Taught by leading scholars and drawing on SOAS expertise in the Global South, the programme provides students with a non-Eurocentric approach to addressing key debates in the field. -

This unique interdisciplinary programme offers critical grounded knowledge of global media and digital cultures in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, with a focus on the dynamics between media and politics and diplomacy, media and social/political change, media and development, media and conflict, media and representation and media and identities. The degree prepares students for jobs in the media and communication sectors, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, UN bodies and international organisations. Taught by leading scholars and drawing on SOAS expertise in the Global South, the programme provides students with a non-Eurocentric approach to addressing some of the key debates in contemporary lives – populism, hate speech, fake news, access and representation, inequalities (with a specific focus on gender and minorities) and transnational communities and diasporas. The course will expose students to the main discussions around the role and impact of global media players, including the tech companies on digital economies and futures. -
