The Master of Arts degree in Public History is intended to meet the educational needs of those aspiring to professional advancement in the field of public history. The curriculum in history and public history provides a sound basis to: deepen students’ knowledge of history and public history, and to expand their critical thinking skills; provide students with opportunities for extensive fieldwork and collaborative community projects as they complete their coursework, while also providing experience in their chosen area of study through the internship requirement; prepare students for careers in historic preservation and historical administration, including positions in archives, museums, state historic preservation offices, and cultural resource management firms, and for advancement in job preparation and salary for public history professionals. The Master of Arts in Public History is organized into two tracks, historical administration and historic preservation. The program offers two options within the two tracks: thesis and non-thesis. Master of Arts Degree in Public History with a concentration in Historical Administration requires a minimum of 33 semester hours of credit and includes 21 hours of core courses, encompassing a course in Public History Historiography and Research Methods, two graduate colloquia in United States or European history, a course in Museum and Archival Administration, and Digital Collection Management, as well as an internship, a portfolio, and a course taken within the College of Business to help develop professional leadership skills.
