Master

A Master of Fine Arts (or MFA) is a degree awarded for completion of the graduate program in a creative field such as visual arts, crafts, performing arts, creative writing, photography, ceramics, dance, textiles, graphic design, theater or filmmaking. MFA degree programs emphasize practical application of the discipline or craft being studied. Normally, Master of Fine Arts degrees culminate in a thesis project, which could take the form of an exhibition, performance, publication or presentation. Master of Fine Arts programs open a multitude of professional doors for graduates and, as a terminal degree, it qualifies graduates to teach the subject on a university level.

It takes most students two to three years to successfully finish a Master of Fine Arts degree, which is longer than the average Master of Arts program, due in part to the applied nature of the MFA. Throughout the course of the MFA program, students create many works within their art or craft. Graduate MFA students work to develop and improve their work in the context of constructive critical feedback from their professors and peers. Feedback is often provided in a group critique, where other students enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts, and the professor are involved.

The costs of taking a Master of Fine Arts degree vary from university to university, and depending on the country. Some prospective MFA students may be eligible to apply for financial assistance or a stipend from a public or private organization, or from the university. Specific information can be sought by contacting the university admissions department directly using the web-form on the program information page.

Some Master of Fine Arts degrees are available part-time or online for students who are working or have other commitments, which prohibit them from enrolling in a full-time masters program. Master of Fine Arts students who are taking classes part time or online may be required to submit their examples of their work for workshops by either sending in pieces or by travelling to campus for short periods throughout the year.

Graduates from Master of Fine Arts programs find that their career opportunities are significantly increased, and their starting salary may also be higher. After graduation, MFA graduates become professors, artists, entrepreneurs, musicians, actors, craftspeople, producers, managers, writers, photographers, directors and more.
