The Master's programme Western Esotericism puts you at the vanguard of a new and exciting development in the study of Western culture and religion, focusing in particular on the critical historical and analytical study of its esoteric movements.

Esoteric movements in Western culture

The Master's programme Western Esotericism focuses on the critical historical and analytical study of esoteric movements in Western culture. Against the backdrop of the Gnostic and hermetic currents of late Antiquity and the history of the so‑called ‘occult sciences' (notably astrology, alchemy, magic), you will explore the revival of Hermetic philosophy during the early Renaissance, the so-called ‘occult philosophy' and its later offshoots (alchemy, Paracelsianism and Rosicrucianism). The programme will also introduce you to Jewish and Christian Kabbalah and the movements arising from it, theosophical and illuminist currents, and the various forms of occultism and related movements during the 19th and 20th centuries, including the New Age movement.... Overview

The Faculty of Philosophy, in a partnership with the Faculty of Business and Administration, are pleased to announce the launch of their new jointly organized MA program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, starting October 2017. It is the first PPE program in Romania, and one of the very few in Eastern Europe.

Internationally, PPE programs are highly successful at the most prestigious universities, due mainly to the unique combination of skills, perspectives and analytical tools they provide. The first PPE curricula was established at Oxford in the 1920s, and the model was soon followed worldwide. Today universities such as Oxford, London School of Economics, Warwick, Princeton, Yale or Duke offer PPE degrees at various levels. After 1990, PPE programs have gained hold also in “continental” Europe, and are offered, among others, by Leiden, Lund, Amsterdam, Bern, Zurich, Graz, Hamburg, Milan, Prague and now Bucharest.... Overview

This is a two-year research master programme aiming to provide students with various useful skills and insights needed to do independent intellectual work in philosophy at postgraduate level. Some of our students want to acquire these skills and insights as preparation for a Ph.D. track, some plan to use them in another area of intellectual enterprise, and some are just curious and want to know what postgraduate studies in philosophy are like. But all of them are invited to participate in a lively research environment in which students are encouraged to interact with some of the best scholars in this field.

Generally, due to its focus on clear thought, cogent argumentation and elaborated criticism of philosophical accounts, Analytic Philosophy has proven to be an extremely useful instrument in the philosophical professional training. Our program fosters various valuable skills such as critical articulated thinking, accurate identification of the main tenets of a debate, minute analysis of the issues discussed, elaborated argumentation in favor of a point of view, and the rapid detection of fallacious arguments. Thus, students who do not wish to pursue an academic career in philosophy may still find many opportunities to apply later these skills in public institutions or companies where clear analytical thinking is a valuable asset.... Philosophy and science don't mix. Or do they? What we nowadays call "science" used to be part of "philosophy." It is not without reason that Isaac Newton called his physical masterpiece "The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy." And today, the two are still closely connected. Our current worldview is strongly shaped by scientific thought. We look to science for both answers to our theoretical questions and solutions to our practical problems. The Master's programme in Philosophy and Science analyses the relation of philosophy and science in terms of their historical development, as well as the current situation. How did the scientific worldview come from? What are its ingredients? What have models for the relationship between philosophical and scientific thinking been proposed?... [-]
