We have strong expertise in Hellenistic literature, Greek linguistics, Greek religion, Latin poetry of the early Empire, and Literature in its spatial and socio-cultural context. In Groningen, we offer the MA in Classics & Ancient Civilizations: Ancient History as a one-year Master's track -in English- with a full-time and a part-time tangent. While we cover the whole of antiquity, from archaic Greece to the late Roman Empire, our focus lies on the political, cultural, and religious connectivities of the Mediterranean world.

In the two-year Research Master's degree in Arts and Culture, you can choose between two tracks. The track in Literary and Cultural Studies offers you an advanced study of the arts. Also, you will specialize in one of the involved art forms: literature, film, theatre, music or multimedia forms.

The MA in Arts and Culture: History of Architecture and Town Planning positions the evolution of the European city (including the post-socialist cities in Central and Eastern Europe) as intimately linked with trends and tendencies at the global scale. The input of the Thomassen a Thuessink Chair results in a clear focus on the health effects of the built environment and the phenomena summarized in the healthy cities concept (ranging from yesterday's hygienic measures to tomorrow's urban guerilla gardening campaigns).

The Master programme Arts and Culture provides students with the skills needed to investigate the function of the arts in society. It combines in-depth knowledge in a range of specific disciplines with professional and social engagement as well as critical and creative thinking.

The MA in Arts and Culture: Art History is a unique curatorial program, with a combination of historical and theoretical depth. The faculty of our masters is specialized in the fields of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, Northern Renaissance and Baroque art, including pre-modern globalization, the art of the Enlightenment, twentieth-century art, art criticism, new media, and materials and techniques.

The MA Archaeology (Research) has been designated the best graduate program in Archaeology in the Netherlands, for two years in a row. The program offers a combination of taught courses and (a broad range of) elective components, with a challenging multidisciplinary approach. There is close monitoring of progress and intensive supervision by high-quality researchers in small groups.
