Graduate work in music is designed to provide advanced professional training. The Master of Music in Music Education degree program provides advanced study of music teaching in elementary and secondary schools and professional preparation for those who already possess initial certification. Other Master of Music concentrations provide specialized study in performance, conducting, and music theory. Graduate Assistantships are available in all areas and are awarded based on merit. For theory, a score of 75% or better on the UCA music theory entrance exam is required. For performance and conducting areas, an audition with area faculty is required. For conducting and education areas, a taped performance of the applicant’s ensemble is required.
The Vocal Performance major focuses on giving vocalists the tools to ‘get to the music’ as full partners with great instrumentalists and producers. The program is form-fitted to the passions of each student and presents them with opportunities to gain feedback from professionals in A&R, recording, film & television and live touring.
The Music Department at Northeastern offers a Master of Arts in Music (Applied Pedagogy). Pedagogy is defined as the art of teaching. This degree prepares students who already have a bachelor's degree in music for successful college-level teaching; in-service elementary and secondary public or private school teaching; or continuation into doctoral degree work.
Master's students in the Music department have the unique opportunity to study broadly across four exciting sub-disciplines: composition, ethnomusicology, musicology, and theory. Advanced course work and thesis research support is strong is Western classical music, African-American music, and World Music (Africa, East and Southeast Asia, and Latin America).
The master of arts in music degree is designed to provide an opportunity for students with an undergraduate degree in music to continue their musical education by implementing an integration of studies in music and other supporting areas designed to broaden the student’s experience and knowledge in music and its application to a variety of professional and personal goals.
