Law Studies

Masters degrees are more versatile than doctoral qualifications and have a broad range of professional and academic applications. According to the U.S. Department of Education, three types of masters programs exist research, professional, and terminal. The most popular masters degree types are Master of Arts (M.A.) and Master of Science (M.S.) in a mixture of subject fields.

Depending on one’s preferences, becoming a professional in law and regulations may lead one to a number of different subdivisions. Among the most popular of these specializations are commercial law, regulatory theory and international relations.

Europe is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the western most point of Eurasia, Europe is usually divided from Asia by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways connecting the Black and Aegean Seas.

MA in Ocean Governance

University of Malta
Campus Full time October 2018 Malta Valletta

This Master’s degree programme on Ocean Governance being offered by the University of Malta in collaboration with the International Ocean Institute is unique in its approach – it aims to forge a knowledge base that is essentially legal but which also delves into the natural and social sciences to determine how an effective regulatory framework should operate. [+]

Ocean Governance is a topic of increasing significance and concern in the 21st century. The 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention and other International law instruments are useful tools that safeguard the rule of International Maritime law. Notwithstanding their valuable contribution emerging international concerns, essentially based on the escalating crisis of unsustainability, instigate an urgent need to explore new trans-disciplinary approaches on ocean governance,. Evidently, a more comprehensive, legal framework is required to improve the manner in which States and their nationals maintain the rule of law in marine areas beyond national jurisdiction and in regulating anthropogenic activities affecting the ocean and its resources. Emerging issues and threats, such as global maritime security, the sustainable use of the oceans and their resources, as well as linkages between natural sciences, socio-economic requirements and the law, necessitate a multidisciplinary approach for promoting learning and research on ocean governance.... MA in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development

Duration: One year (full-time); Two or three years (part-time, daytime only).

Minimum Entry Requirements: Upper second class honours preferably in a related discipline

Start of programme: September intake only

The MA in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development provides a unique specialisation in a rapidly developing area of law. Environmental law is one of the most challenging fields that has grown very rapidly over the past four decades and is now one of the key areas of both domestic and international law. At SOAS, we understand the environment in a broad sense which includes not only environmental issues strictly speaking but also all the links that they have with other areas such as natural resources, human rights, economic development trade or intellectual property rights. In other words, there is a very direct and close link between environmental law and sustainable development. This is not surprising since sustainable development has been the umbrella concept guiding the development of environmental law since the late 1980s. It remains the central concept around which environmental law and policy is centered (the Rio+20 summit was known as the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development) and around international development policy is focused at least until 2030 in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals adopted in 2015....
