The MA in Creative Writing at Wits University is a highly regarded two-year MA in which students complete a full-length creative project and an accompanying reflective essay. The programme is housed in the School of Literature, Language and Media but enjoys cross-disciplinary collaboration with lecturers and supervisors from several schools in the Faculty of Humanities. Guest writers and publishers are invited to conduct workshops or give lectures in the programme, giving students the benefits of their experience and expertise. This programme is a rigorous and intellectually challenging introduction to philosophical ethics, and, in particular, applied or “practical” ethics, based in the Department of Philosophy. It is designed for professionals in the Gauteng region with some management and leadership experience and presupposes no background in philosophy. It is not a programme in “professional ethics”—e.g. business ethics, biomedical ethics, technology and ethics, etc.—though some such material is sometimes covered in one or more of the electives. Rather, its emphasis is on learning methods and techniques for thinking about ethical issues of any sort. It includes exposure to the principal ethical theories and critical examination of some well-known work in various sub-fields of applied ethics. It is not a distance-education programme; regular attendance at seminars is required. This programme provides students with specialist training in African and diasporic intellectual and literary history. Taught by leading figures in the field, the programme inducts students into core theoretical debates and new approaches in the field while using African literary material to resituate and critique major trends like world literature and postcolonial theory emanating from the Anglo-American world. Capitalizing on Johannesburg as the new intellectual hub of the continent, the programme draws participants from across the continent and beyond. Staff members in English at the University of the Witwatersrand are able to offer supervision at Master’s level in areas ranging from medieval texts to contemporary literature, with particular strengths in Renaissance studies, Victorian fiction, modernism, postmodernism and postcolonial writing. Topics in literary theory, as well as inter-disciplinary projects, are equally welcome. Staff undertaking supervision are active researchers, who publish regularly in their fields of specialisation. In the 2014 QS World University Rankings by Subject, the department was placed in the top 51-100 category. For this degree, students write a dissertation of approximately 45,000 words under supervision, on a topic selected in consultation with the Department. The topic must be in line with the expertise of the available lecturers.

To be admitted to this Degree, students must fulfil the Department’s admission requirements (in addition to the University’s admission requirements) and prove their knowledge of research methodology and history of philosophy. Some of the requirements are [i] at least 65% average for the Honours degree in Philosophy and [ii] the submission of written philosophical work done for the Honours Degree. The purpose of this qualification is to provide students with the ability to conduct advanced research, to employ analytical insight within a defined area of textual investigation, to record the results of the research in an acceptable format, and to employ these skills in such a way as to promote his/her opportunities for intellectual development, gainful employment and meaningful social activity. A topic is selected in consultation with the Lecturer.

The candidate must submit a proposal on a clearly defined area of textual analysis. The proposal must reveal an understanding of correct research procedure, the possession of relevant knowledge of subject content, and the necessary theoretical and methodological skills.... [-]

This area encompasses a research dissertation on a theme from the Old Testament (OT) or New Testament (NT) or a combination of themes from the OT and NT. The master’s programme is by nature an advanced study in either the OT or NT building on the knowledge within the fields already obtained on Honours level. The programme is a dissertation written on a theme from the Old or New Testament.

Biblical Studies Honours or an equivalent qualification is a prerequisite as well as the general university entrance requirements for the Master’s programme. Greek or Hebrew up to second-year level may be required depending on the field of study and research.

The postgraduate programme in Applied Linguistics and Literary Theory, in drawing on the knowledge fields of both its disciplines, is aimed at the specialised education and training and research needs of language practitioners such as translators, interpreters, text editors, language planners, copywriters, literary reviewers and language teachers. Translation and interpreting are complex linguistic, cognitive and textual processes that, among other things, also entail socio-cultural mediation.

Given the complexity of these activities and hence the interdisciplinary nature of language practice, these programmes offer a balance of theoretical, practical and experiential knowledge and skills.... [-]
