Proceeding from a solid foundation in literary history and theory, Mainz University’s master’s program in English Literature and Culture offers the perfect mixture of core modules on mainstream literary topics and ample opportunity for students to develop and follow their own interests. It builds upon the BA program in English Literature and Culture at Mainz University but also welcomes applicants from English Literature programs elsewhere in Germany, Europe, and other parts of the world.
Engaging with the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and other anglophone territories throughout the world, the discipline of English Literature and Culture sees its primary remit in fostering among its students an understanding of the inner workings of literary texts and of the contexts in which they appear. To that end, students are expected to have foundational training in the subject of English Literature encompassing the study of literary modes and genres, literary history, and literary as well as cultural theories before embarking on this course of studies. On that basis, the MA in English Literature and Culture will help them develop an interest in less traditional fields such as popular culture, media studies, and empirical aesthetics, all supported by a variety of theoretical approaches. The program’s core curriculum guarantees structured progress and development while the vast number of electives allows students to determine their own specializations. The final thesis, written under the supervision of one of our internationally experienced professors, provides evidence of our students’ development into independent researchers at the end of the two-year course....

The American Studies Master’s Program is designed to emphasize research-oriented perspectives on American language, literature, culture, and their theories. It builds upon the B.A. program in American Studies at Mainz University but also welcomes applications of students from American Studies programs in Germany, Europe, and other parts of the world.
American Studies has seen a number of major changes in theory and practice in the last decade. Its traditional emphasis on the language, literature, and culture of the United States has been expanded both conceptually and methodologically. Reaching beyond the continental geographical focus of the United States, the more recent concept of Transnational American Studies includes new regions of language and literature, branching out into Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific Studies. The Mainz M.A. program responds to these new developments and encourages students to explore the transnational dimensions of American Studies. ...

The focus of our M.A. program “Human Geography: Globalisation, Media, and Culture” lies on the re-negotiation of the (power) relation between space, society, and culture in the current era of late post-modern globalization. Specific emphasis is on the questions: How are these new or transformed relations medially conveyed? Which socio-cultural challenges are raised by this? How can these problems be addressed politically?
Media-sensitive cultural geography is key in times when digital technologies permeate all spheres of our life and substantially change our communication and “geo-positioning” in the world. Communication equipment continues to be miniaturized and mobilized. Furthermore, we are experiencing a huge surge in mapping and geo-coded positioning. Thus, a new form of geographical awareness is arising, meaning we are set out on an entirely renewed interest in space, regions, and places. The geographical media content of the program is, therefore, devoted to analyzing newly arranged global geographies....
