Master in Design Cultures

The MA programme Design Cultures is all about the study of product design, graphic design and fashion in a broad diverse cultural context. The focus is on both the designer as ‘author’ and the complex chain of production, sale, consumption and criticism in which design operates and derives its many different meanings. Design Cultures restores design as the core object of academic interest without detracting from the cultural and material context in which it operates. The programme combines a generalist, comparative approach to design with a clear focus on history and theory.

Career Prospects

The Design Cultures course is taught in English. It is an internationally oriented course which has close ties with real-life practice. Besides studying the theoretical and historical background of design, students get a chance to do their graduation project in association with key players in the design world. Students of Design Cultures can look forward to careers in cultural institutions (editor, project manager), museums (researcher, curator), media, (author, critic, producer), government (administrator, advisor), design agencies (researcher, consultant) and educational and research institutes (teacher, researcher).... One year Masters of Arts (MA) in Fashion Design: New Materials & Technologies

Paris College Of Art
Campus Full time 1 year September 2018 France Paris

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Fashion Design proposed by PCA, focused on new materials and technologies, is a one-year program aimed at equipping designers with the knowledge and skills required to make the most of emerging new technologies and materials. [+]

MAs in Fashion in Europe 2017/2018. The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Fashion Design proposed by PCA, focused on new materials and technologies, is a one-year program aimed at equipping designers with the knowledge and skills required to make the most of emerging new technologies and materials. New materials are being developed at a fast rate, enabling garments to do more than clothe: they can measure temperature, transmit information about the wearer’s physiological state, provide stimulation, release compounds into the skin, etc. These materials are often used for sportswear and underwear, but they can serve a purpose outside of technical wear. The goal of the program is to encourage and enable designers of ready-to-wear to incorporate them into their design, whether it be men’s, women’s or children’s wear. Students will also learn to work with new technologies, such as using 3D printing to produce a garment or creating connected garments. France hosts many companies specializing in innovative materials (Lytess is a pioneer in cosmetotextiles, which are textiles containing a substance or preparation intended to be released permanently on different parts of the epidermis) and connectivity (Cityzen Sciences was the first to launch a connected T-shirt), and we will draw on this local expertise for our Professional Practice Workshop Series. The program combines technical knowledge and principles of design research and theory. Studio classes and workshops conducted by professionals from relevant fields (materials experts, engineers, designers) emphasize the mastery of new materials and technologies and their incorporation into a wide range... About the Programme Remember that you are unique and have a vision to share – listen to that vision and allow it to inform your time as a designer. The contemporary is full of noise and so unless you free-fall a little in ways that you are able to, this vision gets clouded fast. There is a sharp reality about the economics of our time that creates expectations and demands speed, or conclusions that arrive too fast. But this is your place, your time and this is what you must respond to, to enable growth of the new. You can be the new liquid society that runs through the fingers of the big players – mercurial and magical. A fearless approach to creative expression, fanatical technique and an informed professionalism is what we look for and encourage on this programme. The focus is towards strengthening this spirit of exploration through unique expertise and a polymathic debate with modern global awareness. We further encourage a strong work ethic across a broad variety of personally driven, industry-oriented and cross-programme design projects. The realisation of individuality within a global design context is enabled through our excellent links with practising designers, international fashion houses, cross-programme relations and a dedicated staff team. New ideas, materials, methods and design applications are continually originated and progressed by our MA, MPhil and PhD students.
