The MA program Design Cultures is all about the study of product design, graphic design and fashion in a broad diverse cultural context. [+]

Master in Design Cultures

The MA program Design Cultures is all about the study of product design, graphic design and fashion in a broad diverse cultural context. The focus is on both the designer as ‘author’ and the complex chain of production, sale, consumption, and criticism in which design operates and derives its many different meanings. Design Cultures restores design as the core object of academic interest without detracting from the cultural and material context in which it operates. The program combines a generalist, comparative approach to design with a clear focus on history and theory.

Career Prospects

The Design Cultures course is taught in English. It is an internationally oriented course which has close ties with real-life practice. Besides studying the theoretical and historical background of design, students get a chance to do their graduation project in association with key players in the design world. Students of Design Cultures can look forward to careers in cultural institutions (editor, project manager), museums (researcher, curator), media, (author, critic, producer), government (administrator, advisor), design agencies (researcher, consultant) and educational and research institutes (teacher, researcher).... About the Programme

Jewellery & Metal (J&M) forms part of the School of Material. Within this context, we are committed to exploring the rich and diverse field of adornment and object culture. We encourage an open-minded approach that in principle embraces all materials. But it is metal that constitutes the technological core of our subject and we believe that a deepening understanding of the metal elements is key in these developments; the Periodic Table is our reference in expanding our activity within the subjects of jewellery and metalwork.

The attitude of Jewellery & Metal has shifted from a purely object-centred focus to a wider scope, questioning and exploring issues centred on the human condition. We are responsive to the rapidly changing social and cultural landscape and draw on history and technology in nurturing intellectual and creative skills directed at understanding and pushing forward jewellery and objects of human making. The rich and extensive bodies of knowledge associated with object-making and jewellery underpin an approach that is outward-looking, open to the wider discourse on commodity objects, connecting to contemporary life.... Master of Arts in Fashion Design: Haute Couture/Haute Technology

Paris College Of Art
Campus Full time 1 year September 2019 France Paris

This one-year program focused on new materials and technologies, equips designers with the knowledge and skills required to make the most of emerging new technologies and materials. [+]

This one-year program focused on new materials and technologies, equips designers with the knowledge and skills required to make the most of emerging new technologies and materials.

New materials are being developed at a fast rate, enabling garments to do more than dress: they can measure temperature, transmit information about the wearer’s physiological state, provide stimulation, release compounds into the skin, etc. These materials are often used for sportswear and underwear, but they can serve a purpose outside of technical wear.

The goal of the program is to encourage and enable designers to incorporate them into their design, whether it be men’s, women’s or children’s wear. Students will also learn to work with new technologies, such as using 3D printing to produce a garment, creating connected garments, or incorporating LED lights in their designs. France hosts many companies specializing in innovative materials and connectivity, and we will draw on this local expertise for our Professional Practice Workshop Series. Students also attend the international Première Vision and Avantex shows for fashion professionals.... [-]
