The Master of Arts in Fashion and Textile Design is proposed as a research and experimental laboratory in which to study and develop, in collaboration with manufacturing industries and professionals in the sector, the design of innovative, sustainable, intelligent fashion collections that combine together the different creative processes (concepts of design and patterns, prints and threads, study of fibres, dying and embroidery, printing and weaving techniques) in relation to their technical characteristics, end-use destination and marketing.

This course provides students with an environment to work both collaboratively and independently within a portfolio of fashion subjects, which include film, illustration, journalism, photography and styling specialisms. Students develop business and entrepreneurial skills to underpin their future career and further their intellectual enquiry through a research methods module. Knowledge is deepened through specialist projects and learning opportunities, enabling students to define their individual direction for a professional creative outcome.

MA Design (Ceramics); MA Design (Furniture); MA Design (Jewellery) will develop your creative abilities, imagination and expertise. It offers three pathways: Ceramics, Furniture and Jewellery. These disciplines all have a rich tradition in material-led creativity. Framed within one course, we explore the evolving boundaries of these disciplines, embracing ideas of practice beyond traditional definitions. This allows a range of hybrid practices to emerge, disrupting assumptions around design, craft and manufacture. The course focuses on design as a process and as a practice. We look at design as modes of thinking, as ways of communicating to audiences and systems of engagement with the materiality of the world. These factors will impact the way your ceramics, furniture or jewellery design work will be realised. It will influence how you design it, talk about it, debate it and how you write about it. We are interested in all forms of manufacturing – from master craftsmanship, artisan work and the hand-made to factory production and emerging technologies. Our students are interested in single artefacts, mass-market delivery and all stages in-between.

Beyond the understanding of performance and the role of character creation through costume, the study of Costume Design at MA level allows you to locate your practice within the wider realms of contemporary culture and art, as well as within the relevant dramatic, social and political contexts.

Students will have the choice of two pathway options to focus their interests: Creative Pattern Cutting or Garment Technology.You will experiment with a range of digital and manufacturing technologies and techniques, materials and components in order to achieve your goals. As well as developing conventional and creative pattern cutting techniques, you will become conversant with digital pattern technology and you will explore digital pattern development through using 3D sampling software.

MA Fashion Entrepreneurship and Innovation equips fashion creatives and entrepreneurs with the essential skills and toolkit to launch and scale new businesses effectively, and offers unrivalled networks across all sectors of the fashion industry. In-depth studies of innovative emerging designers in the UK provide an understanding of the British fashion industry while extra-curricular international study tours provide valuable insights into the global fashion market. Industry presentations and factory tours have taken place previously in Paris, Milan and Shanghai and have explored everything from French Haute Couture to Italian craftsmanship and Asia’s luxury fashion boom.

MA Performance Design and Practice explores performance making, design and time-based work. It promotes hybrid practices, critically exploring the conventional boundaries between fine art performance and theatre. The course encourages criticality and restlessness, alongside an exploration of new forms of practice. It asks: What is the context for contemporary performance? What is its purpose? Who is it for?

This course provides a unique opportunity to bridge the gap of specialist subject knowledge in fashion in combination with digital media practice. Utilising experimental media techniques and technologies, you will produce a range of innovative moving image outcomes. We are looking for natural storytellers who want to break new ground through the visual representation of fashion narratives. You will exit the course with a new portfolio to support your progression to industry or further research.
