The 1993 Maastricht Treaty has had far greater ramifications than on economic policies alone. The discipline of European studies has developed in order to understand the many effects of these changes and how to work with them through such subjects as history, culture, politics, business, and economics.

The Netherlands is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, consisting of twelve provinces in North-West Europe and three islands in the Caribbean. English speaking students will have no problems finding suitable courses. For international students applying to universities in the Netherlands, several scholarships are available.

The MA in International Relations: European Politics in a Global Perspective is special because of its interdisciplinary and policy-oriented nature. We study integration from a historical, IR-theoretical, legal and social-economic point of view. We strongly feel that developments in Europe cannot be properly understood from a mono-disciplinary perspective and that a thoroughly integrated approach is needed to gain a proper insight into the issues under study. European integration is interdisciplinary by nature. Moreover, we attach great importance to the practical translation of the knowledge and (oral and writing) skills acquired during the MA track. Students in the Master's track European Politics in a Global Perspective write policy notes and research papers, participate in debating sessions and simulation games, (critically) review standard works in European integration studies and, last but not least, do a traineeship with a European organization (public or private), either in the Netherlands or abroad. In other words, we are highly motivated to provide the students with an appropriate background in knowledge and skills to prepare them for a well-positioned entry on the labor market. -

International relations is about the EU as an international player. Trade, energy, the environment, finance, migration, and conflict – some issues are just too big for a single member state to tackle alone. You will look at how different European countries, with their own interests, militaries, and diplomatic corps, come together to deal with common challenges. You will examine the types of ethical and practical issues underpinning international cooperation and conflict. -
