MA Programs in Ergonomics

In university catalogs, courses counting toward a master’s degree are identified by being in the 500–600 range. In addition to a number of core program requirements, students are often able to choose elective courses that meet their academic goals.

What is an MA in Ergonomics? Advanced studies in human factors includes contributions from physiology, biomechanics and industrial design. It elaborates on occupational health and safety topics and analyzes what factors influence worker productivity. Students often come from a health sciences, engineering or psychology academic background.

Students who complete such a program better understand worker injuries and how they can be prevented. They also develop a keen eye for the sometimes small or subtle changes that can be employed in posture, a work area or a product’s design to protect humans from unnecessary strain that so often leads to fatigue. They’ll also come out with a better grasp of psychology as it relates to organization and space, being able to draw the connection between work and its effects on the mind and body.

Costs depend on the institution offering the training. Many schools accept international students and can offer or connect them with housing options.

Ergonomic specialists may be hired into full-time, permanent roles or as consultants as needed. Others are employed in usability labs, where methods such as ethnographic analysis and iterative design are frequently employed. Many specialize in human-computer interaction, working to prevent problems common to computer operators like eye strain, back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. A few work with product and clothing designers to optimize design for the user or wearer’s comfort. Many join professional associations after graduation to network and keep up with industry happenings. Others apply for PhD programs to lead research and make contributions to the field’s body of knowledge.
