Do you want to contribute to societal change? Do you see issues around you that you think could be improved or solved? Are you creative and entrepreneurial? Are you looking to work with like-minded people? Paris College of Art joins forces with MakeSense in this one-year Master’s program (MA) in Design for Social Impact that equips citizen designers with the practical know-how (design thinking methods, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills) to successfully lead design projects that will bring positive societal changes. The guiding question for this program is:

How can design change the world?

Each academic year students will work with faculty and partner organizations to answer this question on a specific theme – for the 2017-2018 academic year the theme is SHELTER (REFUGE in French). Students will research and design solutions to issues related to temporary or permanent shelter, whether it be a built shelter, a sanctuary, or a condition of increased safety and comfort. In a time of mass migrations, increasing pollution, lasting homelessness, youth unemployment and an aging population, students develop SHELTERS that make a difference.Examples of student projects previously incubated at MakeSense include services to the homeless, products that protect from air pollution or programs that encourage physical activity in senior citizens to decrease the risk of injury and associated health costs. In the first semester students will work with a social entrepreneur in an on-going effort to apply the skills they learn, and in the second semester, they will develop their own individual project that can... About the Programme

The MA programme provides students who have already acquired knowledge and skills in various areas of design with an academic framework in which to continue to develop their own professional direction. The course takes a pluralistic view of the students’ ideas and interests and there is an atmosphere that encourages experimental, groundbreaking work, encouraging a critical approach and a questioning of accepted practices.

The programme has a matrix structure comprised of horizontal teaching units, called Platforms, and a set of vertical themes, which cut across the Platforms. In the first year, students undergo an orientation period in the autumn term, and a diagnostic period in the spring term, experiencing the different design perspectives of the Platforms and the different themes through a set of project briefs. In the summer term, students elect a Platform to follow for the remainder of their studies, underpinned by one of the themes (or a theme of their own choosing). Each Platform is led by two tutors (who are practicing designers), and each theme is led by either a senior tutor or the head of programme, who work together to choose the content and area of focus they wish to concentrate on for the autumn and spring terms, and engage with the students through assigning briefs, and meeting with them on a weekly basis. In addition, students are taught a set of methods and tools, such a critical thinking, user-facing methods, that will underpin their work. Second-year students are expected to produce... [-]

What is the role of design and the designer in today’s fast-changing world? As technologies progress rapidly, so do the possibilities of what constitutes design expand. Along with the growth of societies, as communities reimagine themselves, the designer’s canvas evolves as well from not only creating solutions, to preserving the values and thinking behind them in response to constrained resources as diverse needs increase.

Therefore as design exists within an increasingly complex and interconnected world, we need to emphasise the social, environmental and downstream impact of designed products, services and systems. We will need to factor in not just market-driven forces and material possibilities, but what the making process itself means. This is why the practices of Design and Design Research are increasingly important across industry contexts, whereby we rethink not only the makeup of the solutions but the process of inquiry that generate those solutions as well....
