MA Applied linguistics is the most common of a number of Masters, or MA as they are commonly known, which have a higher concentration on science and focus less on classroom practice .
Generally speaking, design involves several skills to build unique products and solutions for both public and private sector organizations. Design experts bring together creativity, innovating thinking, analytical talents and problem solving to plan and construct objects, concepts, or processes in many different circumstances.

The Interaction Design programme requires students to develop their hands-on creative and practical skills as well as the more theoretical aspects of interaction design.
Master of Arts in Interaction Design
With 3 choices of study plan (targeted at students from various backgrounds), 3 exit points (providing varied depths of study), and 3 lengths of course (supporting students’ workflow needs), this master’s is designed to be ‘user-friendly’. Classes range from design theory and design research through skills workshops to practical ‘hands-on’ project-centred learning.
Students get the opportunity to spend at least one year pursuing their Interaction Design related interests on thesis projects centred around topics such as Critical Discourse, Semiotic Analysis, Social Narrative, Experience Design, Communicative Environments, Pervasive Networks, Pattern Languages, Media Channelling, Posthuman Ethics, Multi-sense Engagement, Digital Ontology, Tangible Interactions and “Glocal” Diversity....

Our academic calendar is based on a quarter system (1 quarter = 10 weeks). Because of the program's flexible structure and modular design, multiple starting dates are available at the start of every Quarter and of every Term, in October, November, January, February, April, May, July, and August. All campuses follow the same academic calendar.
Full-time students can earn a Master degree in 1 academic year of 9 months, for a total of 3 quarters of 20 credits each, or within 12 months when spreading the workload.
Part-time students can earn a Master degree in 2 to 3 academic years, depending on the number of courses attempted per quarter, the course selection and the course planning; earning half the typical number of courses equals twice the duration of the full-time program....

The MA in Visual Communication Design will enable such a graduate to integrate existing models of thinking and making with emerging technologies and methods in the field
Young graduates of applied art, commercial art, graphic design and visual communication design often feel the need to step out of the daily demands of the profession to engage in new learning, to experiment and enhance their creative capabilities and to sharpen their thinking and making skills so as to transform their abilities and become proficient practitioners. The specialization in Visual Communication will enable such a graduate to integrate existing models of thinking and making with emerging technologies and methods in the field of visual communication. The course will equip young graduates with agile professional abilities, become meaningfully resourceful, artistically inclined and process-oriented in the field of visual communication.Study of the nature of visual information processing and comprehension forms the basis of this course. Students intersect their learning with six key domains of visual communication design: aesthetic, functional, historical, symbolic, perceptual, and cultural. The discipline of Visual Communication focuses on providing core competency in developing visual literacy, visual thinking, visual perception, imaging, and representation. Design processes, research methods, history and theories of design form the building blocks for developing comprehensive and successful branding strategies and creative communication material. The curriculum approaches visual communication through theoretical frameworks that not only inform and enhance the practice but also encourage the students to question the norms and scale traditional boundaries. The course will provide a platform to use design thinking to break rules, to express unique ideas, to question norms, and, to explore and experiment with the tools and methods of visual communication. MA in Experience Design
The vision of this specialization is to create qualified digital interaction and experience designers who can think critically and creatively about the future of interaction design.
This course has the following industry partners.
Modes of Learning offered by the specialization in Experience Design course
The curriculum comprises of different ways of learning as follows:
Studios encourage active, contextual learning where students develop core disciplinary skills and knowledge. Studios facilitate collaborative and creative design solutions to complex, open-ended problems.
Workshops provide intense learning experiences in making and doing, across the different disciplines....
The MA Interior Architecture and Design explores the emerging symbiotic relationship between 'interior design' and 'interior architecture' in comprehending, crafting, and
There is currently a divide between what we regard as 'Interior design', and what we regard as 'Interior architecture'. However there is an on-going convergence of both fields, and an opportunity exists to fuse together the most influential elements of both; the creativity, process, and design thinking of designers, with the science, knowledge, and pragmatism of architecture.
The programme aims to fuse key aspects of both fields, to prepare graduates to enter and lead an evolving design industry. Heriot-Watt University is well known as a leader in STEM education and research and as such we aim to consider and combine the role of both science and design in informing interior architecture and design. Students are educated through a variety of studio projects, specialist subjects, and cross-disciplinary contextual and theoretical courses....

Obtaining the MA degree of the Visual Art and Visual Communication Design graduate program involves a 4 semester long period of rigorous study which combines studio work in art, design or theoretical study related to these fields, and which form the three main tracks of the program. The degree requirement is a fully articulated studio project or a written theoretical dissertation which revolves around a cohesive query, concept or topic that can be applied to at least one of the three areas of investigation of the program, and which as a finalized product is expected to be presented to a jury at the end of studies.
While students may choose to remain solely within any of the three main tracks indicated above, due to the increased nature of hybridization in the overall field of art, design and related theory we also make provisions for hybrid projects/written theses which spread themselves out over two or more of these fields, or combine the expertise and methodologies of them into novel outcomes which reside at their intersections....
