The M.A. program in the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (UEP) at Tufts prepares a new generation of leaders – ‘practical visionaries’ – who will contribute to the development of inclusive and sustainable communities.

A nationally accredited program, it is distinct from many other planning and policy programs by having a strong social justice focus. Tufts UEP graduate students learn to engage and confront the social and environmental challenges in today’s world of rapid urbanization.

Program Requirements

The accredited M.A. degree in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning requires completion of 14-course credits (most courses receive one credit), including a thesis (1 or 2 credits) or capstone exam (1 credit), plus an internship. The M.A. program usually takes two-years of full-time study. Students may also enroll in the program on a part-time basis.... [-]

The Master of Arts in Urban and Public Affairs trains students in public policy, urban studies, and grassroots organizing, examining ways policy and community engagement can effect positive change.

Our program combines graduate seminars in urban studies, politics, sociology, and public policy with hands-on experience in community-based research, policy design, policy analysis, advocacy, and implementation. Graduates are uniquely equipped to formulate policy and initiatives for more equitable and vibrant urban areas, inspired by thoughtful engagement with the theory and practice of social justice.
