In October 2020 journalists Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov won the Nobel Peace Prize for defending and promoting freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia. Muratov was the subject of fear and intimidation campaigns in his native Russia for challenging authoritarian elements within the government.
