MA Degree:

The Master of Arts in TESOL degree is a 36 credit-hour program. With a broad range of courses, the program aims to equip the students with the linguistic knowledge and pedagogical training essential in the various aspects of TESOL, including, among other things, curriculum design, material development, methodologies, classroom procedures, and assessment. The program also offers students practicum opportunities to gain first-hand practical experience in the field

Certificate of TESOL:

The certificate is an 18 credit-hour program created especially for those who do not want to pursue a master's degree but desire credentials in TESOL that will aid them in gaining employment in TESOL both domestically and overseas.

Admission Requirements:

All applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college with a GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. The applicant with a GPA slightly below 3.00 may, with permission of the program chair and graduate faculty, enter the program on probation; he or she must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.00 in the graduate curriculum to continue.

Students admitted on probation may take a maximum of nine hours per semester and cannot enroll for the following semester until they are fully admitted.

All international and probationary students are required to take Research and Writing (TESL 5373).


There are many exciting opportunities for holders of a Master's in TESOL from Oklahoma City University. Many of our graduates teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in schools all over the United States. Immersive programs, public and private schools, and colleges and universities need teachers with the skills and knowledge to help their students succeed. Others branch out and teach ESL or EFL (English as a Foreign Language) in schools all over the world.

The demand for qualified ESL/EFL teachers has grown steadily in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. With a Master's in TESOL, you set yourself apart and open up new opportunities in colleges and universities as well as the top high schools and prep schools.

For our foreign students that gain a degree or certificate in TESOL, you increase your value to your school or organization. If you are a teacher, your students will benefit from your knowledge of the learning process and your new ideas. Administrators will be able to pass on their knowledge and influence the future of language education in their home countries. School owners, will know the methods for teaching languages and recognize effective teachers.

The course TESOL Practicum serves as a type of internship where students observe, tutor and/or teach at various sites including intensive ESL programs, public school ESL, literacy programs and church-operated ESL classes.
