Program Description

MA in Language and Linguistics, Swedish/Scandinavian Languages

Lund University

Programme overview

Lund University offers you a unique opportunity to pursue advanced studies in Languages and Linguistics at Master’s level. At the Centre for Languages and Literature, you will have access to the most modern resources for research and education.

You will study together with students from a number of different fields of specialisation, such as English, French, German, Greek, Modern Greek, Latin, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish/Scandinavian Languages, Rhetoric, Cognitive Semiotics, Phonetics and General Linguistics.

All Master's students partake in the obligatory courses common for all specialisations while simultaneously deepening their knowledge in their specialisations’ own courses. The programme thus combines a broad and sound base in advanced linguistics with an expertise in your own specialisation.

Specialisation in Swedish/Scandinavian Languages

Students aiming for a Master’s degree with a specialisation in Swedish/Scandinavian languages will meet a research community that is particularly strong in generative grammar and in research on text and discourse. We focus mainly on Swedish, but other Scandinavian varieties and sometimes even other Germanic and non-Germanic languages are also dealt with.

At Master’s level we offer courses in grammatical theory, word formation, discourse analysis, semantics and lexicology, and linguistic change, which are all relatively general in their scope, whereas courses on linguistic variation within Scandinavian and Scandinavian historical linguistics have a more specifically Scandinavian perspective.

Programme modules/courses

The Master of Arts (120 credits) programme consists of the following:

1. Compulsory courses common to all specialisations (15): Philosophy of Science for Linguists (7.5), Fundamental Linguistic Methods (7.5)

2. Compulsory courses for each specialisation (30), and a Master's degree thesis (30)

3. Elective courses (45), to be selected from a list available from the programme coordinator
