General

Program Description

Do you want to become an expert on international tourism and leisure management with an understanding of both cultural and financial aspects? Do you want an education that allows you to put theory into practice - abroad? Do you want to study in an international environment and meet students from other countries?

Then the Graduate program in International Tourism and Leisure Management is right for you!

Communication and economy

International Tourism and Leisure Management is a uniquely, combined program that is comprised of 50 % social science/economy subjects and 50 % cultural and communication subjects. The language of instruction is English.

The subjects have been created in collaboration with an expert panel, allowing you to obtain relevant qualifications for employment in the tourism sector.

Tourism’s consistent growth

International tourism demonstrates consistent and continued growth. This calls for advanced understandings of sustainable tourism development, innovation, and strategic communication. An MA in International Tourism and Leisure Management will provide you with qualifications to work in private and public businesses concerned with tourism, leisure, and culture in Denmark and abroad. As an MA in International Tourism and Leisure Management, you will be able to work independently on development projects, processes, and analytical tasks within the tourism and leisure sectors.

An international education

We have strong international ties to universities in tourism education and research. There are always exchange students at our campus, ready to give you first-hand experiences with foreign cultures. A semester abroad doing an internship or taking elective courses will also qualify you internationally. Your future employers appreciate the maturity, knowledge, and experience that are the result of a stay abroad, and studying in an international environment.

Program structure

The Graduate program is compiled of equal parts of linguistic/cultural subjects and sociological/economic subjects.

The following areas are represented in education:

The Social Science part:

  • Leisure and tourism economy
  • Project Management
  • Quantitative Research Methods
  • Innovation Management

The Humanities part:

  • Sustainable tourism development
  • Strategic communication
  • Experience Design
  • Current Issues in Leisure and Tourism Management
  • International Tourism Studies

The linguistic/cultural (humanistic) part of and the sociological/economic part run parallel. There is an interaction between separate subjects and joint projects where the interplay between economy, language, and culture renders a versatile overview of the topics. Below, you can learn about the structure of the individual lectures.

The ninth semester may be spent abroad doing either an internship or taking courses at a university. The education is completed by signing a contract with a supervisor and writing a thesis of 60-100 pages. The thesis may be theoretical or written in collaboration with a business or company.

Learning outcomes

Master's Degree in International Tourism and Leisure Management is a 2-year full-time program (120 ECTS points), which builds upon the skills acquired by students on their BA study program within the fields of business economics, marketing and national economics on one hand, and culture, language and communication and tourism on the other. In addition, the students specialize in fields of special relevance to the tourism area within cultural theories as well as economics, marketing, and management.

The course contains equal proportions of humanities and social science subjects, taking into account the fact that students can choose to write their thesis in one of the two fields or combine the two fields.

The aim of the program is to ensure that graduates are capable of becoming innovative tourism entrepreneurs and carry out relevant jobs especially within the tourism industry in Danish and foreign companies and public and private organizations on the basis of skills in international business economics and management and in culture and communication theory as well as English language skills at a high level. Furthermore, the program will qualify students to conduct and participate in academic work and to apply to continue to a Ph.D. degree.

Career opportunities

The principal aim of the program is to educate today’s students to become philosophic practitioners of tomorrow. We do this in multiple learning environments that take the challenges of that future practice into account from both research and practice perspectives. As such we have developed a unique approach to learning that we call Participatory Inquiry. The Participatory Inquiry process enables the students to bring theory acquired from their lectures or analysis into play with the theory and skills they discover through their own practices or in collaboration with tourism businesses and organizations.
