Program Profile

The two-year Master's Degree Program in International Affairs. M.A. program at MGIMO University is designed to provide both Russian and international students with necessary skills required for employment in international organizations. The curriculum best serves those students who are willing to become directly involved in politics, government or political organizations. Courses are designed to help graduates embrace their role as global citizens who are able and willing to be part of an international, multicultural environment.

The Governance and Global Affairs M.A. program may be especially useful for applicants interested in Russian domestic politics, state and legal systems, economics and international relations. At least some command of Russian is recommended but not required. Students from countries other than Russia will attend courses in the Russian language – 10 academic hours per week. The Program provides extensive teaching of doing business in Russia, various aspects of Russian political culture, key political processes and conflicts.

Russian - Italian Double Master's Degree Program MGIMO - Luiss Guido Carli University, Italy

Concept: 2-year Master’s Program

  • 1 year - the Master in International Affairs program “Governance and Global Affairs” offered by MGIMO
  • 2 year - the International Relations program offered by LUISS.

Degrees Awarded:

  • From MGIMO - Master of Arts in International Relations
  • From LUISS - Laurea Magistrale (Master Degree) in Relazioni Internazionali (“International Relations”).

The Dual Master's Degree Program ushers in a new level of partnership between the two Universities and offers innovative approach to education in the international relations field.

In the first year students study at MGIMO University, fulfiling curriculum based on the international Master's Program “Governance and Global Affairs” taught entirely in English. In the second year they study at the International Relations program offered by one of the finest European liberal arts Universities - LUISS.

Russian-Swiss Double Master's Degree Program – University of Geneva, Switzerland

Concept: 2-year Master’s Program

  • 1 year - the Master in International Affairs program “Governance and Global Affairs” offered by MGIMO
  • 2 year - the MBA Program offered by Geneva University.

Degrees Awarded:

  • From MGIMO - Master of Arts in International Relations
  • From University of Geneva - International Organizations Master of Business Administration.

The Dual Master's Degree Programme MGIMO-University – University of Geneva was established in 2012.

The first year of the Programme takes place at MGIMO-University, where the students have to fulfil a tailor-made curriculum based on the international Master’s Programme “Governance and Global Affairs” taught entirely in English (see above). The second year is held at the University of Geneva on the basis of the “International Organizations Master of Business Administration” (10 months + 3 months internship).

At the end of the two-year period graduates are awarded two Master’s Degree Diplomas:

  • M.A. in International Affairs from MGIMO and
  • MBA from the University of Geneva.

  • proof of completion of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with a satisfactory result.

3 years of work experience is preferred, but not compulsory for MGIMO students.

Tuition Fee

  • 6,500 Euro for the first year at MGIMO University plus 1 500 Euro for the second
  • 40 500 CHF for the second year of study at University of Geneva.

Dual Master’s Degree Program with University of Reading

Concept: 2-year Master’s Program

  • 1 year - the Master in International Affairs program “Governance and Global Affairs” offered by MGIMO
  • 2 year - the MA offered by University of Reading.

Degrees Awarded:

  • From MGIMO - Master of Arts in International Relations
  • From University of Reading - Master of Arts in “International Security Studies”.

The Agreement on Dual Master’s Degree Program was signed between MGIMO (U) and University of Reading in April 2013, with the first intake in 2013-2014 academic year. The joint curriculum is based on MGIMO international Master’s Program “Governance and Global Affairs” taught entirely in English and the MA Program “International Security Studies”, offered by University of Reading.

During the first year all the students are supposed to study at their home universities, coming for the second year to the host ones.

Students will be eligible for the UoR award when they have fulfilled the UoR requirements after one year of study at UoR and will be eligible for the designated Masters degree at MGIMO when they have fulfilled the Masters requirements for MGIMO at the end of two years of study.

Career Opportunities

The curriculum of the Double Degree Program combines training in analytical methods and practical management skills to ensure that graduates are prepared to understand problems and implement solutions. Students combine these core skills with a focus on a policy area of their choice. Toward the end of their studies students engage in a practice-oriented internship. Program graduates have employment opportunities in federal, state, and local governments and with private civic groups, interest groups, and political groups. Students who go on to graduate work can expect to find appointments in college teaching. MGIMO graduates are in high demand by employers in business and industry. Internship Program helps considerably in finding employment upon graduation.

Degree Requirements

The M.A. year begins with an intensive program in politics, international relations, economics, designed to strengthen students skills. All courses are taught in English. If candidates’ command of Russian is adequate, during the M.A. academic year they can select additional courses from the courses available to the Russian students of Master’s Program in International Relations and Political Science taught in Russian.

Some courses are essentially lecture/discussion; others are seminars in which students present papers for group discussion and workshops based on field research, participation by visiting experts, and group reports.
