Program Description

The Master of Arts in Development Studies and Diplomacy is an interdisciplinary and holistic program that will not only broaden student’s knowledge in the field of development studies, sustainability and diplomacy but it will also equip them with the required soft skills for a successful international career in any of these areas of expertise. It is offered both online and face-to-face on the UPEACE campus in Costa Rica. During this program, students will analyze the different dimensions of development including, environmental, social, economic and human dimensions as well as the theory and practice of diplomacy in the 21st century. Students will also attend skills development sessions that are designed to support their professional career and employability. Careers in this field can be very broad. Prospective employers include governments, international organizations, development agencies, academia, and the private sector.

The program is designed for graduate students, diplomats, government officers, NGO representatives, international civil servants or private sector specialists willing to strengthen their knowledge in development studies, sustainability, international affairs management, and diplomacy.

Duration/Modality

Students must complete the Master of Arts in Development Studies and Diplomacy (face-to-face) in two semesters. Students can complete the Master of Arts in Development Studies and Diplomacy (online) and the Certificate in Development Studies and Diplomacy (online) in a maximum of 4 semesters.

The Master of Arts in Development Studies and Diplomacy is currently offered both face-to-face and online with the following credit/cost breakdown:

MA in Development Studies and Diplomacy (face-to-face)

  • UPEACE = 34 Credits
  • UNITAR = 8 Credits  
  • $ 19,500 Tuition

MA in Development Studies and Diplomacy (online)

  • UPEACE = 33 Credits 
  • UNITAR = 9 Credits  
  • $ 8,700 Tuition

Learning Objectives

At the end of the master’s program, students should:

  • Have a deep understanding of the theory and practice of development studies, international cooperation, and sustainable development.
  • Be able to evaluate the different dimensions of development.
  • Have a deep understanding of the theory and practice of diplomacy.
  • Be able to appraise the nexus between diplomacy, the UN System and current contemporary challenges.
  • Be able to apply key soft skills in an international working environment.

Optional Field Trip to Geneva and The Hague

Each year, UNITAR will organize an optional 5-day field trip to Geneva (Switzerland) and The Hague (Netherlands) for the students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Development Studies and Diplomacy and the Certificate in International Development Studies and Diplomacy.

During this activity, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the very heart of diplomacy, visit different international organizations and network with other diplomats, personnel of permanent missions accredited to the UN, civil servants of international organizations and civil society representatives.

Students will spend 3 days in Geneva and 2 days in The Hague.

The fee of the five-day field trip is 1,500 USD. The fee does not include travel, accommodation, food or visa expenses. 

The optional field visit will take place every Summer. The exact dates will be agreed in conjunction with UPEACE depending on the availability of UNITAR’s experts.

Admission Requirements

The following documentation is required to complete your application process for the UPEACE on-campus M.A. programs. Please have them ready and on hand before beginning your online application process, as they will need to be uploaded into the system.

Required supporting documents to be uploaded:

  • English Proficiency Test Scores Report (TOEFL, IELTS)
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Official Undergraduate (Bachelor's Degree) Transcripts and Degree Certificate
  • Curriculum Vitae or Resume
  • Copy of valid identification
  • Passport-size photo

The online application requires electronic (PDF) scans of required documents. Should admission be granted, the following documents will eventually be required in official hard copy:

  • English Proficiency Test Scores Report (TOEFL, IELTS) - if applicable
  • Official Undergraduate Transcripts and Degree Certificate (and English translations if applicable)
  • Three (3) passport size photos

Upon submission of the online application form and supporting uploaded documents, the UPEACE Admissions system will send an automatic confirmation email. The date and time of submission will be noted in the system. Applications received after the established deadline will be considered for admission for the following academic year. Each application received by the established deadline will be reviewed for completeness. A second acknowledgment will be sent to the applicant by the Admissions Officer, informing him/her of the status of his/her application, whether it is complete and able to be passed on for academic review. We are not able to provide any information about the status of applicants over the phone or to third parties. Information will only be provided to the applicant using the email provided in the online application form.
