MA International Tourism and Aviation Management with Internship
The Master's programme in International Tourism and Aviation Management seeks to prepare aspiring individuals for a managerial career within either the tourism and aviation industry. For existing practitioners, it offers the opportunity to develop and redefine knowledge and assess trends and changing management practices within their industry. It is offered as a one year full-time and two-year part-time course.
The Internship Course seeks to provide the same rigorous and challenging programme of professional practice as the MA but has the added advantage of including a 24 week paid internship incorporated into the period of study. This makes it ideal for students seeking to add a practical dimension to their studies and understand the demands of workplace supervision and management. Internship opportunities exist throughout the tourism and aviation industries both within the UK and overseas. The internship process is coordinated by the University’s own dedicated internship team and draws upon contacts with over three thousand employers.
The MA programme is essentially global in perspective drawing upon international case study material. In adopting a generic business and management approach to the study of tourism and aviation management the course seeks to avoid the excessive subject specialisation that characterises many of its competitors. In doing so it widens career opportunities and the possibility of movement between the two sectors.
The key strength of the programme is its simple yet flexible structure. Employer engagement is assured with guest speakers drawn from industry and the use of ‘live client ’briefs. The programme is taught by a young but experienced team all with a background in either tourism and/or aviation management. Many of these staff are extensively published and are asked to speak at events and conferences throughout the world. The MA is taught in a dedicated learning environment within the university with elements of the programme sponsored by key industry players.
The course has links with ‘sister programmes’ in Europe, Asia and North America allowing the opportunity for staff and student exchange. In addition, it is accredited by the Institute of Travel and Tourism. The programme is delivered in a Q.A.A. (UK Government Quality Assurance Agency) centre of excellence for tourism and aviation education.
Fieldwork, trips and visits are a feature of the course.
Jobs and placements
For those students following the internship route, this is the main way you get involved with employers during the course. We fully support you in your search for an internship. This starts from the first week of the course and includes help writing CVs, letters of application and skills statements. We also encourage you to register with the University’s careers service, which gives you access to thousands of potential employers.
In the Management Consultancy module, various employers set live client briefs to assess your role as a business consultant. This is often your first formal opportunity to access employers and familiarise yourself with modern business concerns.
Case study analysis and visiting speakers also bring the world of work into the classroom, and you are encouraged to join any trips and outside visits we arrange. There is no better way to learn than by direct observation and interaction.
Finally, remember all your peers have worked in the industry, or still do. Find out what they have done, swap business cards and life experiences. You will quickly find one of the best ways of finding a job is through drawing upon their work experience and potential contacts.
You would normally be expected to have a good honours degree (2.2. or above) in a related subject area, for example, Tourism or Transport Studies. For students without these qualifications entry via a conversion course is a possibility (the Graduate Diploma in Tourism Management). International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.5 or above, and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening), TOEFL ibt at score at 90 or above, Pearson PTE Academic at score 58 or above, or an equivalent secure English language test. In some countries where teaching is in English, we may accept local qualifications.
