MA Fine Art

MA Fine Art is an opportunity to look at the familiar with a fresh, perhaps oblique perspective in order to explore how “detour” permits “access” (Jullien 2004) to more subtle yet more complex interpretations. What constitutes a meaningful and useful research methodology in one culture may be considered unknown, unnecessary or redundant in another.

These differences are at the very fabric of the Fine Art course; establishing deliberate cross-cultural dialogues with students from International and UK backgrounds and providing a vehicle for highlighting differences in working practices and methodologies.

Simón Granell studied Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art and The Slade School of Art, London. He is currently MA Fine Art Course Leader at the Arts University Bournemouth. Curatorial projects include Underground (2007) with Roger Ackling and Eric Butcher; a site-specific collaboration in the labyrinth of basement rooms at Shoreditch Town Hall, London, A Machine Aesthetic (2013-2014) at Gallery North, etc.

Course Philosophy

Recognising the individual and their aspirations, and celebrating ideas and risk-taking, our approach and experience of encouraging interdisciplinary and collaborative activity lie with the provision of a meaningful journey for our students beyond the obvious.

They meet the fresh, often unpredictable and certainly challenging possibilities that are offered as they test, develop, progress, interrogate, ‘make’ and confidently reflect on their practice.

Our guiding principle is to offer distinctive and exciting opportunities for students to engage in their respective subject discipline in order to redefine their particular individual approach to their practice and position it within their chosen external creative economic and cultural environment.

Crucial to the course is that each student demonstrates a passion for their practice within their chosen medium and subject discipline.

MA Fine Art gives you the chance to explore how “detour” permits “access”, as Françios Jullien said in 2004. What constitutes a meaningful and useful research methodology in one culture may be considered unknown, unnecessary or redundant in another. These differences are the very fabric of the Fine Art course, which establishes deliberate cross-cultural dialogues with students from international and UK backgrounds, and provides a vehicle for highlighting differences in working practices and methodologies.

As an international student, you are not here simply to gain a UK education at Master’s level but to lend your voice, practice and ideas to an environment that celebrates the cross-pollination of countries and cultures in the discourse and creation of work. You’ll work alongside fellow international and UK students in a way that is essential to the course’s delivery and structure.

As a UK student, this is an opportunity to test your practice within a broader European or non-Western context, that is dependent on the composition of the cluster of students selected. You’ll reflect upon the determinants that inform your practice amongst the broadest student voice available. You’ll explore what it means to adopt particular working strategies and methods, and the contexts that inform these. These might be self-imposed, institutional, or cultural.

By taking advantage of the diversity of the course’s cohort, you’ll be able to explore the cultural and educational differences delivered through practice, discourse, workshops, faculty and collaborations with a range of MA courses across the University and Architecture. Our course not only acknowledges the contribution of international students but also puts centre stage the dialogue that is created with UK students on the course.

Course Outline

MA Fine Art represents an exciting opportunity for students to challenge and build on their previous achievements and to study at an advanced level. Students deepen their knowledge and their ability to focus on their chosen field in relation to the key aspects that inform it.

Set within a community and culture of makers, students engage in dialogue and debate with their peers, both within and across MA pathways.

This experience provides dynamic and interactive sessions, which are vital to the enhancement and testing of new thinking and ideas generation as well as offering the broadest available critical arena for discussion of student work.

Part-time Pathway

The part-time pathway is carried out over a period of 90 weeks – rather than 45 weeks as in the full-time pathway.

Unit

The first unit, Strategies of Practice seeks to identify and critically review the attitudes and understanding underlying your Fine Art practice. It does this by encouraging you to return, through practice, to an engagement with fundamental components of your Fine Art activity, exploring the contextual issues that motivate and shape your practice, including audiences, sites of display, technological advances.

You’ll be encouraged to reflect ‘in-action’ as you question the nature of visual communication. You’ll be encouraged to scope out new areas for deeper enquiry.

Innovation, collaboration and communication are key skills taught by professionals and academics in the units Masters Project 1 and Masters Project 2. These units promote the processes necessary for students to engage in new technological advances, develop critical and theoretical frameworks, and raise their level of business awareness and self-direction along with an understanding of the trans-disciplinary nature of the contemporary creative practice.

In Masters Project 2 you will work towards and produce your final outcomes/conclusions following the rationale established in your Study Plan. In this phase of the study, you will apply the research methods identified in Masters Project 1 and determine how to present and disseminate the outcomes of the project.

Your interview and portfolio

As part of your application, we require a portfolio of your work.

Application Deadline

Applications are open for 2020 entry.

You can apply from November and there is no set deadline for applications.

It’s worth remembering that overseas applicants who pay the full tuition fees by 1 August will receive a 10% discount.

We encourage you to apply early so that you have time to organise accommodation and to arrange for a visa (if required) before you enrol.

Entry Requirements

We encourage applications from students with a broad range of qualifications and we welcome students from all educational backgrounds. we will take into account the knowledge and skills that you have developed outside the classroom as well as your previous qualifications.

UK Applicants

  • You will usually have BA (Hons) Degree graded at 2.1 or above, or an equivalent UK or international qualification in your chosen subject or a related discipline.

Overseas Applicants

For overseas applicants, we accept a range of English Language qualifications, including the following qualifications for MA and Master of Architecture (MArch) courses:

  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) grade C
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) grade C
  • Certificate of Attainment in English (London Board) level 5 or 6
  • IELTS score of 6.5 or above
  • Pearson PTE score of 54 and over, with a score of 51 in each component.
  • IELTS, Pearson and TOEFL scores must be less than two years old at the time the course commences to be valid.

We may also accept TOEFL iBT scores of 80 or above for entry to degree courses; however, we would prefer one of the above qualifications.

TOEFL is a test of American English and is not classified as a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for Tier 4 Visa applicants.

Alternative Qualifications/Experience

  • Applicants with other than the required academic qualifications will be considered for entry if there is sufficient evidence to indicate that they have the potential to fulfil the objectives of the course of study and to achieve the standard of the final award.
  • Applications are also welcomed from those with other qualifications or with work experience which demonstrates appropriate knowledge and skills to study at postgraduate level.
