The MA Fashion Journalism is an ideal progression for students who wish to build on a bachelor’s education in fashion, but also for those with a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than fashion who may wish to move into fashion and specifically into the specialist field of fashion journalism.

The programme will prepare you to embark on your career within Fashion Journalism with a good understanding of current developments at the forefront of the industry while nurturing your ability to enter a world of journalism that is evolving very quickly. The programme will develop journalists who are independent in their thinking and who will welcome the challenge of a fast-moving environment in a state of flux.

The MA will explore traditional journalism and newer forms of journalism. You will strengthen your ability to approach evolving landscapes and digital platforms as well as niche print zines with a fluid approach and a spirit of exploration. While the programme will enable you to work in fashion journalism, it will acknowledge the interconnectedness of fashion with its closely related industries including art, graphics, product design, furniture and interior design, marketing and brand strategy, architecture, music and performance and wider contexts including entrepreneurial business and community projects.

You will have the opportunity to travel to other fashion capitals and one fashion study trip is included in the cost of your programme, ensuring an international perspective on the fashion industry and on your specialist area. You will take part in the study trip alongside other fashion master’s students. You may also have the opportunity to take additional, optional, fashion study trips with your fellow students.

Through the programme you will engage with the community, reporting on subjects which are brave and demand to explore. In line with developments in fashion journalism, the programme uses fashion as a starting point to explore new avenues of interest to the increasingly sophisticated and global 21st-century audience. The programme educates journalists who lead rather than to merely follow the crowd.


The programme is delivered over three terms. It is a 180-credit programme with 60 credits per term. The programme has been designed so that some modules are shared with other programmes, enabling you to study within a wider community of fashion and business students and to broaden your understanding of the fashion industry.

In the third term, you have the opportunity to complete either a dissertation or a consultancy project. The project can, if desired, be completed through a professional placement in industry.

Your programme contains a study trip to an international fashion city where you will be able to study alongside your fellow students and gain a truly international perspective on your subject and industry. You may also have the opportunity to go on further optional study trips.

You will find that your programme involves contact with a lot of fashion professionals. This will happen naturally through your lecturers who are industry professionals as well as academics, through guest speakers and live projects with industry and there may well be other opportunities to network, for instance at fashion events.

Teaching & assessment

Assessment structure

Assessments are authentic and challenging. Briefs are realistic and can be used both to build confidence and resilience, and showcase work required for portfolio and cv.

Assessment is both formative and summative. Formative assessment is information at interim stages during the term (and sometimes as often as once a week) which enables you to understand how you are progressing on a module, what you have done well, what you need to concentrate on in order to do better and what independent study you need to do for the next part of the module. Formative assessment is intended to help you during a module so that we can support you in your learning to do as well as you can.

Study methods

The MA Fashion Journalism is taught by academics experienced both in the industry and also in the academic delivery of the subject. They have a considerable reputation within the field. For example, Julia Robson is one of the best-regarded fashion journalists in London. Julia used to work on the Daily Telegraph as Deputy Fashion Editor to Hilary Alexander. She has also held posts as a fashion editor on a national and fashion columnist for an international (Middle Eastern) newspaper and has written for The Daily at London Fashion Week while working as a consultant for major fashion brands.

Your programme is industry-orientated. For that reason, experiential learning is fundamental to many of the learning and teaching methodologies used on the programme and to many of the assessments that you will complete. Preparation for careers in relevant disciplines contributes to the mission and goals of the University and is integral to the design of your programme.

Meet the team

Heath-Brown was Fashion Director of The Times weekend magazine commissioning and writing features and styling with world-class photographers and creatives. He has contributed to many publications, including The Financial Times, and worked on the e-zine website of fashion brand, Kim Blake is an experienced Fashion PR who helped launch the career of fashion designers including Alexander McQueen and British fashion brands, Whistles and Jigsaw. Guests and visiting lecturers include fashion writers, editors, such as Penny Martin founder and editor in chief of The Gentlewoman, and reporters from global multi-platforms and international mixed media.

Students with disabilities

Assessment will be adjusted to suit the needs of students with disabilities. The aim of such adjustments is to ensure that students with disabilities can be tested on an equal footing with all other students. Entry requirements

Academic requirements

A Regent’s education provides you with a high level of personal attention, and this begins from the moment you apply to study with us. We want to understand who you are and what your skills and interests may be – we are interested in your potential, as well as your prior achievements. We review each application comprehensively and on its individual merit, considering all of your skills, interests, and attributes. Typically, we will make an offer to a student holding a minimum lower second class (2:2) UK Honours undergraduate degree from a recognized institution. Other equivalent international qualifications from recognized institutions will be accepted.

We also welcome applications from candidates who do not meet the essential entry criteria outlined above. In order to be accepted for exceptional entry, you must:

  • Hold a minimum of two years’ relevant work experience
  • Provide a 1000-word personal statement outlining your reasons for applying, and how your previous experience is of relevance to the programme you are applying for
  • Be prepared to attend an interview with the Postgraduate Admissions Panel

English Language requirements

We require proof of English Proficiency. For example, we ask for:

  • IELTS: Overall score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.5 in the writing component and 6.0 in all other components
  • Pearson’s Test for English (PTE): Overall score of 58, with 51 or above in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT: Overall score 80 (We do not accept TOEFL from applicants requiring a Tier 4 visa, as this qualification is no longer accepted by the UK Visas and Immigration Department (UKVI)
  • A-level/GCSE/IGCSE English: grade C / 4 or above (for IGCSE certificates, please provide the Supplementary Certifying Statement with the breakdown of component grades)
  • International Baccalaureate: Grade 5 in A1 or A2 English at Higher or Standard Level

On-campus diagnostic test

For offer holders in London, we can provide a free on-campus English diagnostic test. This test must be arranged in advance. Please note, this is a diagnostic test for Regent’s University London only.


Tuition fees are set for the University’s financial year which runs from 1 August to 31 July.
