The Master of Arts in English Language and Literature offers students the opportunity to examine literary, theoretical and critical texts from a variety of cultural contexts, fostering advanced skills of comprehension, interpretation, and analysis. A core feature of the program is the investigation of English as a global language, with courses in Applied Linguistics, Second-Language Acquisition, Bilingualism, and the methodology of English-Language Teaching, enabling students to develop practical and academic techniques for further research in the fields of Literature and Linguistics.

General Objectives

  • The development of advanced research skills appropriate to the fields of Literature and Linguistics.
  • The sustained and intensive development of critical, analytical, and creative thinking skills, particularly related to modes of humanistic and linguistic inquiry
  • The broadening of students’ linguistic, literary and cultural horizons
  • The understanding of the role of English in a globalised world and its implications on English language acquisition and teaching

Specific Objectives

  • The familiarization of postgraduate students of Literature with writing in English from a broad range of national contexts
  • The familiarization of postgraduate students of Linguistics with core issues of Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition and Bilingualism.
  • The acquisition of an awareness of the relationship between language and society with particular reference to the English language
  • The development of necessary vocabulary and linguistic skills to enable students to become teachers of English or to further their postgraduate studies in Translation and Interpretation.
  • The fostering among postgraduate students of advanced abilities in the comprehension, interpretation, and analysis of literary, theoretical, and critical texts from multiple cultural contexts
  • The provision to students of the necessary knowledge to prepare for, begin, and sustain independent research in the field of Literature and Linguistics, culminating in individually tailored research projects and/or theses

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the program, students should be able to:

  • Apply theoretical knowledge they have acquired in their courses onto current cultural, social and historical debates.
  • Identify commonalities and divergences in international literary cultures that would assist an informed and full assessment of their immediate literary and cultural milieu.
  • Implement contemporary methods of English Language Teaching.
  • Draw informed conclusions on the functions and status of English as a global language and identify varieties of English worldwide (World Englishes)
  • Participate in current debates on language learning, second language acquisition and bilingualism.
  • Participate with confidence in political debates on gender, sexuality, the body, public and private identity performance, subjectivity, nationalism, and human rights.
  • Draw informed conclusions about literature’s relationship to other art forms in a critical framework that also evaluates art and its attendant politics.
  • Practise bibliographical research and apply research organization skills useful in the conceptualization of European research proposals.
