MA English Language Teaching

This course is designed for experienced English as a Foreign Language teachers, who are seeking opportunities to enhance their professional development and career opportunities.

The profile of course participants is very international, including most recently Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Mexico, Poland, Switzerland and the UK.

What you'll study

This course integrates the theoretical and practical aspects of English language teaching. It aims to develop your in-depth knowledge and understanding of the links between teaching, academic research, and theories of language learning and teaching.

Our teaching methods encourage active participation in group work, discussion and exchange of ideas, with the aim of developing students’ critical and analytical skills. We value the range of perspectives that students from different socio-cultural contexts bring to teaching and learning.

We provide one-to-one help with assignment and dissertation writing and are always happy to make appointments with students who want to talk privately about their work and progress.

How you’re taught

Study methods and assessment

Assessment methods are designed to evaluate your ability to apply theoretical concepts to practical work and where possible to relate ideas and proposals to your own teaching context.

A range of assignment types are represented across the course including essays, practical tasks e.g. designing a course, portfolios, presentations, demonstration lessons and class tests.

Learn a new language

Alongside your study you also have the opportunity to learn a new language. The University Language Programme (ULP) is available to all students and gives you the option of learning a totally new language or improving the skills you already have.

Learning a new language can:

  • enhance your communication skills
  • enrich your experience when travelling abroad
  • boost your career prospects.

Your career development

This career focused course is designed to provide a pathway to posts in academic management, teacher-training or materials writing for experienced teachers. We have graduates working as English language teaching professionals, teacher trainers, textbook writers or university lecturers throughout the world. Although this course does not offer a formal placement, it is a vocationally focused course which aims to help you to achieve an English Language teaching post in your chosen country.

Entry requirements

UK

What are we looking for?

  • a UK honours degree (minimum 2.2) or equivalent
  • two years' full-time English language teaching / TESOL experience (or equivalent).

Alternatively, we accept five years' English language teaching / TESOL experience without a degree (non-graduates).

International

English language entry requirements

If English is not your first language you need to show us that your language skills are strong enough for intensive academic study. We usually ask for an IELTS test and we accept some alternative English language tests.
