The Mechanical Engineering graduate program in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Youngstown State University leads to a Master of Science degree with opportunities in a wide variety of engineering and science fields. The program seeks to develop the qualities of engineering problem-solving skills, and independent and creative thinking, with a goal of preparing students for successful careers in mechanical engineering disciplines. Specializations are available in the areas of solid mechanics, design, thermo-fluids, manufacturing, and materials.
Students may pursue the M.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering in one of three planes. The Thesis Plan is a research-oriented program and is strongly recommended for candidates who wish to specialize in a particular mechanical engineering area or/and wish to continue their graduate studies beyond the master’s degree. The Non-thesis Plan allows students to enhance their knowledge and skills to succeed in careers as practicing engineers, and gain experience in working on, writing, and presenting a graduate project. The third option is Management Plan. This plan is recommended to the students who have been in the work arena and are moving into an engineering management role.
The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering has excellent computer and laboratory facilities that provide for the following design and research capabilities: solid modeling; FEA in stress analysis; structural dynamics, and heat transfer; experimental stress analysis; vibrations and noise control; computational and experimental heat transfer and fluid dynamics; advanced machine design; additive manufacturing, and advanced materials synthesis and characterization facilities.
The complete application for admission, including all supporting materials, should be received by the College of Graduate Studies at least four weeks before the beginning of the term in which the applicant plans to register. YSU admits graduate students in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
