M.S. in Computing & Information Systems

General

Program Description

The C&IS program has a unique focus in applied computing and information systems. Rather than concentrating on theoretical computing (as many computer science programs do) or being limited to simple administration of information systems (as most MIS programs are), this program concentrates on the key applications of computing in the real world. This includes:

  • Large-scale design of information systems
  • Database design
  • Computer networking
  • Web development
  • Data mining
  • Application development
  • Computer security

Graduates of the C&IS program have obtained employment at a wide variety of organizations, from local companies including Turning Technologies and Perkins Communications to international firms including AOL and ESPN.

Outstanding research faculty

Graduate students in the C&IS program have the opportunity to work with faculty performing research in cutting-edge areas of computing. Many students have co-authored refereed publications with faculty, and several have continued their research at the Ph.D. level.

Current areas of faculty research and publication include:

  • Distributed search over networks
  • Data mining
  • Facial recognition
  • Software engineering
  • Computer-aided instruction
  • Computer security
  • Medical imaging
  • Geographical information systems
  • Computer game design
