Curriculum
The department recommends that students intending to continue to study history at the doctoral level enroll in the MA program. MA students must be proficient in at least one foreign language and complete a thesis that reflects original thought and research using primary and secondary materials.
MA Requirements:
- Foreign Language Proficiency
- HIST 702: Historiography (3 credits)
- Readings courses (6 credits): Choose two from the following:
- HIST 730: Readings in North American History
- HIST 740: Readings in Public History
- HIST 760: Readings in European History
- HIST 780: Readings in World History
- HIST 710: Research Seminar (3 credits) Taken with advisor who will determine the topic.
- Courses at 600-level or higher (9 credits)
- No more than 3 credits may be taken outside of History department
- HIST 705: Directed Research (1 credit) Thesis prospectus
- Written comprehensive exam with advisor
- HIST 798: Master’s Thesis (8 credits)
- Oral defense of thesis
