About

The Master's Degree in Art Therapy and Art Education for Social Inclusion is an official Master's degree with a professional / researcher profile focused on the visual and plastic arts. The relevance of an official university degree for this area of knowledge derives from the need to articulate quality training that, responding to an existing social demand, allows for the responsible and informed development (theoretically and methodologically) of Art Therapy and art as a way intervention and social inclusion in different areas.

Artistic activity, by integrating the different dimensions of the human being (cognitive, affective, social), is an important instrument in the development of adaptive strategies and resources within an interdisciplinary framework. Artistic language and creative processes represent a significant avenue of work for human development and psychological well-being. Its use in psychosocial, clinical, educational (formal or non-formal) and cultural contexts opens a wide space for work and research. The common name "Art Therapy", favors the delimitation of the field of knowledge, allows establishing common action criteria and facilitates international agreements and exchanges. Art Therapy, within multidisciplinary teams, is especially powerful in areas where verbal language is insufficient; numerous experiences that are currently being carried out indicate that Art Therapy is a form of adjuvant work of great value. Likewise, art in education can be a way of social inclusion, by helping human development both emotionally and cognitively.

objective

The Master's Degree in Art Therapy and Art Education for Social Inclusion is an official Master's degree with a professional-researcher profile focused on the visual and plastic arts. Artistic activity, as an integrating activity of the different dimensions of the human being (cognitive, affective, social, etc.), is presented, within an interdisciplinary framework, as an effective instrument in the development of adaptive strategies and resources.

Artistic language and creative processes represent an effective tool for human development and psychological well-being. Art therapy makes possible a way of working that, included within multidisciplinary teams, is especially suitable in areas where verbal language is insufficient. Likewise, artistic education can be a way of social inclusion by helping human development, both emotionally and cognitively.

The relevance of this degree derives from the need to articulate quality training that responds to an existing social demand.

Recipients

The Master's degree is aimed at graduate students (or a similar level of studies), preferably in the areas of Education (Psychopedagogy, Special Education, Pedagogy), Psychology, Social Intervention (Social Work, Social Education, Anthropology) or Artistic (History of Art, Fine Arts, Architecture or Higher Title of Artistic Teaching), seeking applicants for a multidisciplinary profile, with proximity to art therapy or related fields, and interest in the processes of artistic creation, education and development and social inclusion.

The access criteria are common in the participating universities, but for pre-registration and admission each university has its own deadlines and procedures.

Why study this master?

Art therapy is a profession recognized in much of Europe, USA. and other countries, like Israel. In Spain the figure of the art therapist is not recognized, although means are being put in place by the different professional associations.

Art as therapy is increasingly used as a preventive and improvement medium in educational settings, clinical settings (mental health, pediatric hospital plants, although it has also started in cancer treatments, Alzheimer's, etc.), social settings (art such as resource for social inclusion in the migrant population, homeless people, prostitution, mistreatment and gender violence, homeless minors) and cultural areas (with specific programs for groups with special characteristics in museums and cultural centers and inclusive cross-cutting programs).

This University Master is part of the ECARTE network, the European consortium that endorses Art Therapy studies in Europe.
