There are three priority areas of specialisation:

  1. Landscape archaeology
  2. Archaeology of architecture
  3. Archaeology of cultural material

Students will be provided with basic, methodological, technological and advanced training.

The course is divided into subjects with the following content:

  • Introduction to methodology and content that is of general use for the discipline.
  • Professional-track content. Focusing on specific research areas in the field of classical archaeology.
  • Chronological periods or concepts in classical history and archaeology.

This Master’s degree is designed for graduates in Archaeology, History, Art History or Classical Philology and related fields as well as graduates in similar fields such as Anthropology, Architecture and Geography.

Students who are admitted to the course with degrees in Humanities, Classical Philology, social and Cultural Anthropology, Geography, Architecture or Engineering must take bridging courses of up to 18 credits, as decided by the Admissions Committee. For other situations not described above, the Admissions Committee will assess the need for a bridging course.

To obtain the credits of the bridging course, the students will be informed of the subjects they must study from the URV's Bachelor's Degree in History and the UAB's Bachelor's Degree in Archaeology:

  • URV
    • Archaeology of Greece or History and Archaeology of Greece: 6 ECTS credits
    • Archaeology of Rome or History and Archaeology of Rome: 6 ECTS credits
    • Protohistory of the Mediterranean: 6 ECTS credits
  • UAB
    • Epigraphy and Numismatics: 6 ECTS credits
    • Tools for Classical Studies: 6 ECTS credits

Specific documentation

As well as the compulsory general documentation required for pre-enrolment in the programme, you can also submit:

  • Proofs of complementary training relevant to the content of the master's degree (courses, seminars or other training activities, and attendance at archaeological excavations).
  • Proof of language competence (English, French or German).

Selection criteria

  1. Suitability of the admission qualification, up to 35 points, according to the following scale:
    • Degrees in the humanities and social sciences: up to 35 points,
    • Degrees in the field of engineering: up to 20 points,
    • Other qualifications: 0 points.
  2. Evaluation of the students' academic record in the university degree qualifying them for admission to the master's degree: up to 35 points.
  3. Complementary training relevant to the content of the master's degree (courses, seminars or other training activities, for which proof must be provided, and attendance at archaeological excavations): up to 20 points.
  4. Language competence (English, French or German): up to 10 points.
