Health master's degree in general psychology

Universidad de La Laguna

The Degree in Psychology is the basic level of training that qualifies to practice as a Psychologist in Spain, and does not have by itself recognition as a health profession, therefore, its graduates can legally develop all psychological professional skills, except those that involve valuing and to intervene on health in the health field. These competences have already been framed in the General Public Health Law (BOE 33/2011) which stipulates that it is compulsory to take a postgraduate course in General Sanitary Psychology in order to be recognized as a General Sanitary Psychologist.

The seventh additional provision of said law, dated October 4, forms the profession of General Sanitary Psychologist as a regulated profession, the exercise of which requires possession of the corresponding official Master's degree, obtained, in this case, according to the provisions of the Article 15.4 of Royal Decree 1393/2007 of 29 October, in accordance with the conditions established in the Council of Ministers' Agreement of 31 May 2013, published in the Official State Gazette of 4 June 2013.

Justification title

The ministerial order establishing the requirements for verification of the master (BOE ECD / 1070/2013) under the agreements reached by the different agents of Spanish Psychology (Conference of Deans of Psychology, Council of Colleges of Psychologists of Spain, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health of the Government of Spain) stipulates the basic characteristics that this master must have, in order to be able to develop psychological professional activity for its own account or in the health sector, conducting research, interventions on any aspect of health-related behavior, within the framework of what is established in the Law.

In the last decades, more and more professionals and researchers who orient their work not only to traditional health scenarios but to others that could be considered as emerging. The General Public Health Law only responds to the dramatic increase that the psychological health services have experienced, which allows us to venture a growing demand for these professionals and, consequently, a growing demand for specialized training and quality that contemplates new contexts of sanitary intervention, together with traditional contexts already entrenched.

Several studies show that Sanitary Psychology occupies the most important place in social importance as a professional activity of psychologists (Santolaya, Berdullas and Fernández, 2002). On the other hand, there is evidence of the incomplete integrated construction of academic and professional competences in degree and professional practice (Roe, 2004). In this context the General Law of Public Health frames a new professional regulation in psychology that makes it compulsory to study the master's degree for the professional accreditation of the Psychologist as a General Health Care.

Deepening in the areas or contexts of action of the General Sanitary Psychologist, it should be noted that the professional functions of the latter are related to a large number of activities related to preventive and intervention practices in very different contexts, both in those in which the different contextual elements (agents, contents, formats of interaction, organization of spaces, times and materials) are willing, intentional and priority, to achieve certain health purposes, as in others that, without having as a central focus of their activity a purpose health services, offer certain services and complementary programs that respond to that purpose. The following list includes those contexts in which, at present, professional intervention of a psycho-sanitary nature can take place:

Scope of health and quality of life:

  • Centers for early care and general hospital not concerted.
  • Centers and services that focus their activity on the elderly.
  • Clinical-Psychological Offices

Scope of social reintegration:

  • penitentiaries.
  • Centers and services that focus their activity on young people at risk and helplessness.
  • Centers and services that serve groups of emigrants and persons belonging to ethnic minorities.
  • Centers and services that deal with people in situations of social marginalization.
  • Legal centers and services: juvenile courts, adoption and reception, abuse and gender violence, family mediation, etc.

Scope of leisure and culture:

  • Recreation centers and services: playgrounds, theme parks, etc.

Scope of work and professional update:

  • Centers and services dedicated to professional training and accident prevention.
  • Recognition centers.
  • Centers and services dedicated to the design, development and development of e-learning programs.
  • Centers and services focused on labor insertion.

Scope of social media:

  • Publishing centers and services.
  • Centers and services dedicated to the design, elaboration and development of psychoanalytic resources in digital support: multimedia programs, telematic resources (Internet), etc.
  • Centers and services dedicated to the design, elaboration and development of psychoanalytic radio programs.
  • Centers and services dedicated to the design, development and development of psycho-television programs.

It can be observed, therefore, that the demand for guidance, counseling and intervention of these professionals is no longer limited to the more formal health area (in its various stages) and has recently been extended to other contexts. who are going to develop their work, health psychologists are expanding every day. This demands that the General Sanitary Psychology has a postgraduate regulated education that allows to respond to many different needs and demands.

Thus, and as it has been a tradition in the countries of the European Union and in the USA, it seems justified and necessary - for professional, academic and research reasons - to propose specialization through a master's degree in General Health Psychology.
