Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in International Development Studies (GLODEP)
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in International Development Studies (GLODEP) is a two-year multidisciplinary master program in development studies, with an economic grounding and policy perspective. GLODEP has a fixed structure: a first semester at Palacky University (Olomouc, Czech Republic), second semester at the University Clermont Auvergne (Clermont-Ferrand, France) and a third semester at the University of Pavia (Pavia, Italy). The fourth semester is dedicated to an internship or research stay, preferably with one of the fourteen associated partners of the consortium (see Academic Associates and Non-Academic Associates); and to thesis writing.
The aim of GLODEP is to prepare professionals in the field of development policy and practice. GLODEP provides the students with comprehensive knowledge and skills to analyze development issues and to design and promote development policies at national, regional and international levels. GLODEP has two defining features. First, it links the areas of development studies and development economics, offering insights from economics and other fields, such as geography, environmental studies, and political science. Second, the applied character of the program is reflected in the course contents where the policy (project) dimension is emphasized.
The program provides the students with an opportunity to obtain:
- multi-disciplinary knowledge of development issues, grounded in development studies and development economics;
- ability to analyze development problems and to design and promote development policies and projects for the specific context of a developing area or a sector;
- ability to work in an international environment and in multi- and inter-disciplinary teams, and communicate to a non-expert audience.
GLODEP enables the graduates to work in higher-level positions (for example as government policy officers and project managers) in international organizations (e.g. UN agencies, World Trade Organization, development banks), non-governmental organizations (e.g. Oxfam and World Vision) and in governments (e.g. national development agencies and various ministries), as well as in businesses; with a focus on sustainable economic and human development. Reflecting the character of the program, the graduates will be suited to work in teams of people with diverse professional experience and from a range of disciplinary backgrounds.
GLODEP is organized with the support of the Erasmus+ Program of the European Union.
The program consists of four semesters, with mobility between universities in the first three semesters and a research stay or internship in the fourth. To ensure the internal coherency of the program, the curriculum is fixed for the first three semesters. The first semester at Palacky University (Czech Republic) provides a balanced overview of development issues from various disciplinary perspectives. The second semester at the University Clermont Auvergne (France) gives students a solid quantitative and economic background and prepares them for development-oriented courses in the third semester at the University of Pavia (Italy). In the fourth semester, the students conduct their research or internship and write their thesis.
Each university offers orientation week/days and also language courses (Czech, French, Italian) to help the students to integrate into daily life in the respective countries. Career days are an integral part of the curricula in each semester. Students receive advice on their professional portfolio and have an opportunity to meet potential employers.
GLODEP’s priority is to increase the employability and competitiveness of the program’s graduates. The emphasis is on direct contact between the students and potential employers. Therefore the internship/research stay is an integral part of the program curriculum, which enables students to receive hands-on experience related to the degree and their future careers. Research stays are generally carried out at Consortium Universities and Academic Associates. Internships are mainly organized in cooperation with Non-Academic Associates.
The internship/research stay is prepared in cooperation with the tutor from the receiving institution and the coordinator from the supervisor’s university in charge of the internship/research. Students choose the institution of their internship/research stay and their supervisor, and submit the thesis assignment by the end of October of the second academic year. The supervisor must be an academic staff member at one of the Consortium Universities. The duration of the internship/research stay is 3–4 months.
Successful students will be awarded:
- Joint Master degree from Palacky University and the University Clermont Auvergne.
- Magistr (Mgr.) v magisterském studijním programu N1301 Geografie, ve studijním oboru International Development Studies [Master in master program N1301 Geography, study field International Development Studies].
- Master mention Economie du Développement, parcours Development Economics [Master program in Economics of Development, specialization Development Economics].
- Master degree from University of Pavia.
- Master Universitario di I Livello in Global Development Policy [First level Master in Global Development Policy].
Students also receive a Diploma Supplement issued by Palacky University which contains marks from all semesters converted to a common grading system.
CRITERIA AND REQUIREMENTS
GLODEP International Development Studies is open for candidates with an undergraduate degree preferably in areas relevant to the program, such as development studies, geography, economics, international relations and sociology. The program seeks candidates with excellent academic results, strong interest in international development and proficiency in English.
The admission process for the 2017-2019 is closed. The call for the applications for the 2018-2020 intake will be announced during autumn 2017.
In the first step of the application, candidates must submit the following documents through GLODEP e-application.
- Proof of nationality – copy of passport
Candidates with multiple nationalities must specify at the application stage under which nationality they are applying. The nationality has implications for the amount of the scholarship. The declaration of nationality cannot be changed later. Applicants whose nationality is one of the Erasmus+ Partner Countries and who are not residents, nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in a Program Country, are considered as Partner Country students.
- Proof of place of residence – e.g. a) residence certificate, b) certificate from the candidate’s place of work, study or training issued by the employer or institution in question (the document must be issued within 12 months before the application submission deadline).
- Original/certified copy of a diploma proving completed tertiary education (bachelor/master).
- Original/certified copy of the transcript of records of all completed courses. If the original is in a language other than English, the certified copy must be a certified translation in English.
- Original/certified copy of knowledge of English at the minimum level of C1 (according to CEFR). A minimum level of English skills: TOEFL – at least 79 points; IELTS – at least 6.5 points. Other comparable certificates indicating required level of English language may be accepted in exceptional circumstances (e.g. TOEFL/IELTS certificate is not available in both candidate’s country of origin and country of residence). The relevance of the certificate must be consulted prior to the submission via email. The English certificate rule is not applicable to native English speakers and students who have finished their tertiary studies in a program fully taught in English. In this case, the declaration of honor stating that the candidate is either an English native speaker and/or a student who has finished tertiary studies in a program fully taught in English must be uploaded.
- Curriculum vitae.
- Motivation letter (maximum length 500 words).
- 2-3 letters of recommendation – at least two academics.
The recommendation letter must include date, name, institution, position, signature and contact details (phone number and email) of the person recommending you.
Candidates cannot apply for more than three different joint programs.
FEES AND FUNDING
Participation costs are 9 000 € per year for students from Partner Countries and 4 500 € per year for students from Program Countries. Participation costs include tuition fees, administrative costs (e.g. enrolment fees, student card, library fees, orientation week/day) and insurance. For EMJMD Scholarship Holders participation costs are covered by the EMJMD Scholarship (paid directly to the Consortium, not to students).
All applicants can apply for an EMJMD Scholarship and a Consortium Scholarship. Candidates that have already been awarded an EMJMD/EMMC Scholarship cannot receive the EMJMD Scholarship again.
The EMJMD scholarship (20 students) will be offered to candidates based on their results from the admission process, subject to EMJMD nationality/geographical restrictions. The scholarship can be awarded only to 3 candidates having the same nationality. 75 % of the scholarships are offered to Partner countries candidates, the remaining 25 % of the scholarships are offered to Program countries candidates.
The EMJMD scholarship includes:
- student participation costs (paid directly to the Consortium);
- contribution to student travel and installation costs and subsistence allowance for the duration of the program (paid to the Scholarship Holder).
Self-funded students are offered reduced participation costs of 3000 € per year which covers the tuition fee. The reduction is partly born by the Consortium and partly by the self-funded student. Therefore, the tuition fee does not cover administrative fees and insurance.
