Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Photonics for Security Reliability and Safety


Program Description

We are a European academic consortium offering the Master Degree PSRS, designed and operated by a unique world-leading university-business cooperation of 4 European universities, 26 academic partners and 24 industrial leaders across the globe.

Two-year (120 ECTS) Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree, aiming to train the next generation of highly-skilled experts in advanced imaging technologies, cutting-edge image processing, computational imaging, artificial intelligence technologies, biometrics, pattern recognition, behavioral analysis, spectrometry methodologies, photonics-based sensors, micro-nano-technologies, laser processing and surface functionalization to address the current and future societal challenges related to security and safety of people, goods and environment.

Students will be educated through a strong interaction with industrial partners to application fields as various as: detections of dangerous and\or illegal goods, detection of suspect individuals at borders, signature identification for cashless payment, fighting against counterfeiting, forensics and security markings, analysis of biological systems, detection of driver drowsiness, identification systems in case of medical emergency, measurement of inter-vehicle distances, biomedical applications, medical diagnostics, pollution control, driver vision enhancement, driving assistance (collision avoidance systems), industrial production control, help for a more efficient agriculture, food safety, lab-on-chip biosensors, identification of chemical substances and biological or inorganic materials, high precision fabrication of photonic devices, generation of functional surfaces and advanced materials in industry.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the PSRS Programme, the student should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of photonics, data science and micro-nano technology fundamentals.
  2. Design and conduct experiments involving imaging, technologies, micro-nano technologies or laser processes.
  3. Analyze and interpret data by data processing or artificial intelligence methods.
  4. Identify, formulate and solve photonics or digital photonics problems.
  5. Design a system, component or process to meet industrial needs.
  6. Function on multidisciplinary, multicultural and geographically spread teams.
  7. Understand professional and ethical responsibility.
  8. Communicate effectively in oral, written and other media forms.
  9. Have a broad education necessary to understand the impact of science solutions in a global and societal context and to advance sustainability.
  10. Recognize the need to engage in lifelong learning and the ability to do so.
  11. The definition of the above learning qualities is variable as they are the result of the close involvement of our industrial partners in the learning design of PSRS. Hence they are likely to change from one semester to another to best meet the requirements of employers.

Participation Costs

The PSRS programme benefits from the financial support of the European Union-funded Erasmus+ Joint Master Degree programme. This support allows us to implement a very attractive scholarship strategy to attract the best students.

Participation costs differ if you’re from (i.e. hold the nationality of) a “Programme country” (member states of the European Union AND non-European Union countries situated in Europe) or “Partner Country” (basically the rest of the world). This distinction reflects the rationale of financial instruments of European Union external action, our main financial sponsor.

Participation costs for 2020/2022 intake are set as follows:

Self-funded students will be able to pay participation costs in three instalments.

Participation costs that are charged to each student cover, for the entire duration of the PSRS programme, the costs related to:

  • The selection process;
  • Registration, and notably, local tuitions fees in hosting university;
  • Full access to PSRS curriculum (courses, an offer of master thesis in the industry, exams, thesis examinations);
  • Social insurance and full insurance cover during the entire period of the programme;
  • Student’ affairs services including administrative counselling, degree delivery, support for banking, housing, and immigration affairs;
  • Full access to any science courses offered by hosting universities;
  • Full access to hosting universities’ libraries and online resources;
  • Full access to hosting universities' services (culture, sports, health, etc.);
  • Dedicated local language courses;
  • Special tutoring / mentoring by an Academic Advisor; access to PSRS events and networking activities with industry and alumni.

Accommodation and travel expenses are not covered by the participation costs.

Admission Criteria

  • Applicants should be aware that joining PSRS is an extremely competitive process, which takes time.
  • Only the best 25 applicants will be selected. The ranking outcome will determine the award of EMJMD scholarships and other scholarships to the best applicants.
