Introduction
The Materials Technologies program prepares the next generation of researchers, engineers, and practitioners to assume the role of technical leadership in the research and innovation of the high-tech sector. Students focus on the development and implementation of new simulation-driven design and manufacturing paradigms for the development of advanced materials, structures, and engineering systems with enhanced lifecycle, mechanical and physical characteristics demanded in high-tech industries.
The program is established with a focus on the development and implementation of new simulation-driven design and manufacturing paradigms for the development of advanced materials, structures, and engineering systems with enhanced life-cycle, mechanical and physical characteristics demanded in high-tech industries. The program has been created to prepare the next generation of researchers, engineers, and practitioners to assume a role of technical leadership in research and innovation in the high-tech sector.
The MSc program is 2 years long: the first year is to strengthen your theoretical background, and the second year is to focus on research. Students have the freedom to choose courses and extracurricular activities to shape their individual trajectory, acquire soft skills, and gain entrepreneurial skills to prepare for employment.
Lectures and practical classes conducted by world-renowned professors and experts. | Students' individual research projects carried out at Skoltech laboratories. | An 8-week summer industry immersion program at leading companies turning knowledge and skills into action. | Courses on entrepreneurship and innovation that provide skills, as well as knowledge, to commercialize ideas and research findings. |
Our graduates will have:
- fundamental knowledge in mechanics and physics of advanced manufacturing and materials, in advanced computational engineering technologies
- deep understanding of modern technological methods and tools, information-technology-based manufacturing, and product development practices
- ability to apply their knowledge of information technology, mathematical methods, mechanics, physics, and material science in engineering practice and research in advanced manufacturing and materials
- vision for the creation of new technologies, design, and development of sustainable systems, and development of novel materials
- ability to apply simulation-driven product development paradigm in engineering system design
Aim and Objectives
The aim of the MS program in Materials Technologies is to prepare the next generation of researchers, engineers, and practitioners to assume a role of technical leadership in research and innovation in the high-tech sector. The program consists of formal coursework and hands-on innovation, research, and industry experiences providing students multidisciplinary education in simulation-driven product development, advanced manufacturing and materials, and physics/mechanics of advanced materials and technologies.
Content
The comprehensive curriculum includes courses in Simulation-driven (digital) Product Development, Product Life-Cycle Management (PLM), Advanced Manufacturing Processes, Composite and Nanocomposite Materials, Additive and Thermal Spray Technologies, Industrial Robotics, Mechanics, Micromechanics, and Physics of Advanced Manufacturing, Numerical and Optimization Methods in Engineering and Science, which provide integrated scientific, technological and business perspectives of the high-tech sector. Similar to other Master’s programs at Skoltech, Innovation Workshop and other required courses in the field of entrepreneurship and innovation, such as Intellectual Property and Technological Innovation, complement the core content of the program.
Program structure
The 2-year program comprises compulsory and recommended elective courses on the most important topics, a wide set of elective courses (depending on the research and professional needs of the student), components of entrepreneurship and innovation, research activity, and 8 weeks of industry immersion.
36 credits compulsory and recommended elective courses | 36 credits Research and MSc thesis project | 24 credits Elective courses and projects |
12 credits Entrepreneurship and innovation | 12 credits Industrial immersion |

What our students say
Arzu Kurgan
BSc, Kaliningrad State Technical University → MSc, Skoltech → Ph.D., Skoltech
"A significant fact about my study program is that all of our courses are very practical and help to develop essential skills for engineers. At the beginning of the academic year, we had an Introduction to Materials Technologies course, during which our group had a chance to apply our theoretical knowledge in practice. We managed to make a composite material using various techniques during laboratory work with our own hands. Usually, I spend almost my day at Skoltech, working on the projects, assignments and also spending my free time communicating with other Skoltech students."
Denis Sopichev
BSc, Bauman Moscow State Technical University → MSc, Skoltech → S7 R&D Center
"All my aspirations, hobbies, and interests led me to an overwhelming desire to enter Materials Technologies Master's program after my Bachelor's degree. At Skoltech you can become both the witness and participant in the process of merging digital technologies, materials science, and process modeling. The knowledge obtained in the AMT laboratories and in Data Science courses helped me implement a monitoring system in the advanced metal 3D printing process during my summer internship, and then very quickly adapt to tasks from other areas. The education I received at Skoltech allowed me to participate in the design of the ballistic mission and the control system of the launch vehicle. Many thanks to Skoltech, which allowed me not only to form in my head a system of knowledge and skills necessary for further professional activity but also to obtain valuable life experience."
Guillaume Debaille
MEng, Aix-Marseille University → MSc, Skoltech → ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor)
"In Materials Technologies I really enjoyed the class-based projects around technological problems. It's in fact a perfect mirror of what happens in professional life, within groups of dozen people where managers, technical specialists, and scientists naturally emerge from the group to tackle project difficulties. From the many experiences that helped me in my professional life, getting involved in industrial subjects, and getting out of the comfort zone was a must."
Ekaterina Isachenko
BSc, Novosibirsk State University → MSc, Skoltech → PhD, Skoltech
"During the two years of my Advanced Manufacturing Master's program, I participated in innovative and research projects and gained knowledge in the new field of digital twin design. In addition to courses and practical seminars on campus, students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills during summer industrial internships. And also you can collaborate with almost any university in the world. For example, I did a series of experiments at the University of Auckland, New Zealand."
