This course has been designed as a conversion programme for students who aspire to a successful management career in the international hospitality, events and tourism industry. We provide you with a broad introduction to the industry, as well as the opportunity to focus on a specific area which interests you.
The course modules introduce you to key concepts such as the psychology of tourism behaviour and how to create a marketing plan; hospitality operations; and strategic financial management, as well a choice of electives.

A computer-based hotel simulation project introduces you to the crucial links between financial, human resource, marketing and operations management.
In the module Tourist Consumer Behaviour and Marketing Management you choose an attraction or museum and then research and write a marketing plan for the business.
Researching and writing an academic journal article for the Contemporary Issues assignment helps to develop your research, analytical and academic writing skills.

This course in detail
The following compulsory modules enable you to develop a deep understanding of the complexity of international hospitality, events and tourism management:
Tourism, Events and Hospitality Synthesis gives an introduction and overview of the context, frameworks, concepts, theories and issues in the contemporary tourism, events and hospitality industries. The module provides you with the basis to systematically and incisively analyse and evaluate complex tourism, events and hospitality situations.
Tourist Consumer Behaviour and Marketing Management explores the theoretical frameworks which underpin patterns of consumer demand. It incorporates models and concepts drawn from mainstream marketing, tourism marketing, and the social sciences, forming a comprehensive understanding of tourist consumer behaviour and the tourist decision-making process. Effective and creative marketing is based on sound analysis and is relevant to the complete range of hospitality, events and tourism sectors. You will research and write a marketing plan for a real tourism business.
Hospitality Operations Management introduces you to hospitality operations within an international context. Drawing on relevant management principles, you will acquire an understanding of financial, human resource and marketing management knowledge at the unit level, which underpins the successful management of hospitality, events and tourism companies. There will be site visits to local hospitality businesses to familiarise you with practical examples from industry, and a computer-based hotel business simulation assignment.
Contemporary Issues in International Hospitality, Events and Tourism Management provides you with the opportunity to develop one research focus from a wide range of topics including: accounting, branding, climate change, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, environmental issues, finance, human resources, marketing, risk management, revenue management, social media, tourist consumer behaviour as applied to the international hospitality, events and the tourism sector. You will research your chosen subject area, critically analyse the literature and theory, and write an article suitable for publication in an academic journal. In undertaking this module you will work on your own with the support of a specialist tutor.
The Research Methods module provides an introduction to research methods so that you are aware of the approaches, methodologies and resources available for your module assessment and – most importantly – your dissertation. You design the methodology for a research project that helps you understand how to collect and analyse the data required to write your dissertation. Your enhanced understanding of the research process will prove invaluable in your management career.
The Dissertation develops your ability to critically review literature; identify the gaps in current knowledge; practice relevant research skills to facilitate data collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation and writing. The 20,000-word dissertation provides you with the opportunity to investigate a topic in depth from multiple perspectives, working independently and supervised by a specialist tutor. You choose the hospitality, events or tourism management topic which you wish to study. This can be the same topic as in your Contemporary Issues module or a different subject area.
Mentoring and Leadership Development provides you with an opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of leadership theory and practice. The module will develop your understanding of leadership theory by engaging you with contemporary debates on leadership in the hospitality, events and tourism industries, with a particular focus on ethical leadership. You will develop your professional competencies and understanding of leadership practice through participation in the Oxford School of Hospitality Management's Bacchus Mentoring Programme, which will match you with an experienced mentor from the international hospitality, events or tourism industry.
You can choose one elective from modules such as: Digital Strategies for Hospitality and Tourism Distribution, Events Management, Intercultural Leadership, and Revenue Management. Other electives may also be available.
The sandwich mode comprises one year of full-time taught study and then one year full-time supervised work experience. This provides paid, supervised work experience with a suitable international hospitality and tourism employer. You carry out an assessed project for the company as part of your academic studies on the placement.

Approach to assessment
Assessment is based predominantly on individual coursework and the dissertation.
Each year, there are a series of national and international field trips to events like the World Travel Market, and visits to destinations, attractions, hotels, museums and the corporate office of a leading international hotel company. There are also opportunities to undertake periods of volunteering overseas.

Full-time: MSc: 12 months or 24 months in sandwich mode
Part-time: MSc: 24 months for UK and EU students (teaching normally structured to provide one day or two half days each week in the semester)

How to apply/ Entry requirements
Normally a minimum of a good second-class honours degree or equivalent in any subject. Entry will also be subject to two satisfactory references (one of these must be an academic reference). Although useful, prior work experience in the hospitality and tourism industry is not an entry requirement for this course.
