In 2008 cataclysmic events shattered the world of Finance and caused shockwaves through the rest of the global economy. Some realised that change would be needed but none forecast that less than a decade on the sector would be so radically and irrevocably changed. These new postgraduate programmes in Accounting and Finance; Banking and Finance; Economics and Finance have been designed to develop postgraduate students who are equipped academically to succeed in an increasingly complicated and challenging global workplace. Employability & Careers The demand for highly skilled and knowledgeable finance professionals is now more global than ever before. No longer are London and New York the only homes for large multi-national international financial businesses and institutions. These potential employers are now additionally located in the Middle and Far- East and a postgraduate student is almost as likely to find their first job in Dubai, Bahrain or Shanghai as in the traditional centres. This demand has been instrumental in designing this challenging suite of programmes. In order to maximise employability the programme learning outcomes are geared towards supplying students with the knowledge, skills and understanding that the finance industry requires. A key component of this is the module “Current Issues in Accounting, Economics & Finance”. The programmes seek to meet individual and industry needs by developing students with higher-level cognitive skills and abilities who also possess an excellent practical understanding of "how to apply" rather than just "why it happens". All the programmes have a 20 credit optional Professional Work Experience module which involves a minimum 4 week work placement to take place outside the teaching semesters. Students are expected to organise their own placement and all such placements must be substantive and at an appropriate level. These placements will involve “employer” input and must be approved by the Programme Director prior to commencement. Alternatively students with appropriate managerial level experience within an appropriate field can apply for “Recognition of this Prior Experiential Learning”. The School of Management has opportunities for successful graduates to apply for M.Phil./ PhD study within the School. Entry Requirements & How to Apply Applicants should meet one of the following: Possess, or expect to obtain, an undergraduate degree or equivalent, in a relevant area (Accounting, Economics or Finance) with a minimum of a 2:2 classification. Students with a general Business Studies degree with a relevant pathway or substantive appropriate module coverage will be considered on a case by case basis; Have a minimum of five years relevant work experience in the field of finance; Hold a suitable professional qualification from an appropriate professional body. In some instances those with higher level professional qualifications may be exempt from specific taught modules. Such exemptions would be discussed on a case by case basis with the Programme Director. In general terms graduates from non-financial disciplines will not normally have the pre-existing skills set to succeed on the programme BUT such students are welcome to apply and such applications will be viewed on an individual basis. International Students: Students whose first language is NOT English will need to provide evidence of fluency to at least an IELTS 6.0 standard. [-]

These new postgraduate programmes in Accounting and Finance; Banking and Finance; Economics and Finance have been designed to develop postgraduate students who are equipped academically to succeed in an increasingly complicated and challenging global workplace. Learning & Teaching The teaching philosophy of these programmes is to deliver wherever possible each module with a multi-disciplinary teaching team, providing a more effective framework to encourage and promote an integrated understanding of the field. The role of the module leader will be to co-ordinate, and in effect oversee the delivery of content by the modular team, ensuring that learning outcomes are met. Module teaching teams will be drawn from the course teaching team. This will not only enhance student learning but provide teaching staff with the opportunity to develop their own knowledge and understanding of other business and management disciplines. This approach to teaching will shape and direct content in a complementary and mutually reinforcing way, allowing for the development of multi-disciplinary assignments and projects and students could be exposed to integrated formative assessments. Increasing use is being made of the “Moodle” Virtual Learning Environment and, whilst individual lecturers have individual styles, students will be expected to engage in webinars, on-line discussion forums etc. Prospective students should note that the availability of a VLE is not considered a substitute for regular attendance and in a normal week they will be expected to attend a mixture of lectures and seminars for up to 12 hours per week. Please note that is possible that teaching time is between 9.00 am and 9.00 pm. Forensic Psychology - MSc

Campus Full time Part time 1 - 2 years August 2017 United Kingdom Cardiff + 1 more

The MSc Forensic Psychology is the only BPS accredited programme in Wales, offering a unique opportunity for students to study Forensic Psychology in Wales. [+]

The MSc Forensic Psychology is the only BPS accredited programme in Wales, offering a unique opportunity for students to study Forensic Psychology in Wales. Working collaboratively with NOMS Cymru (National Offender Management Services, Wales), helps keep the programme up to date with strategy development and policy decisions. Regular contributions from practitioners within the Principality enable students to understand more about services within Wales and their impact on our society locally. We also have many national contributors who share their extensive knowledge and experience. Course Content Forensic Psychology is the practice and application of psychological research relevant to crime, policing, the courts, the criminal and civil justice system, offenders, prison, secure settings, offender management, health and academic settings as well as private practice. It looks at the role of environmental, psychosocial, and socio-cultural factors that may contribute to crime or its prevention. The primary aim of Forensic Psychology as an academic discipline is to develop understanding of the processes underlying criminal behaviour and for this improved understanding to impact on the effective management and rehabilitation of different groups of offenders in all settings within the criminal justice system. The first aim of the programme is to provide students with a thorough and critical academic grounding in the evidence relating to environmental, cultural, cognitive and biological factors that may contribute to a wide variety of forms of offending. The programme will encourage students to consider the role and limitations of causal explanations for offending in the development of offender treatments, services and policy. The second aim of the programme is to introduce students to the basic professional competencies for working in the many settings where forensic psychology is practiced, including skills related to inter-disciplinary working, risk assessment, ethics, continuing professional development, report writing and differences in practice when working with offenders, victims, the courts and the police. The programme aims to produce Masters degree graduates with the ability to understand the limitations of the conceptual underpinnings of interventions and assessments used in forensic psychology and who are able therefore to engage in critical evaluation of the evidence base upon which their own practice will eventually be based. Because the programme will specifically avoid providing any formal supervised practice, its aim is to produce reflective scientist-practitioners who will be ready to engage with the final element (stage 2) of the training requirements for becoming a Chartered Psychologist in the practice of Forensic Psychology. Employability & Careers An MSc in Forensic Psychology is the first step (stage one) in gaining Chartered Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and Registered Practitioner status with the Health Professionals Council (HPC). The MSc in Forensic Psychology will provide the knowledge base and applied research skills that will provide the foundation for stage two of the chartered process that requires two years of full-time supervised practice with an appropriate client group. MA Art & Design with pathways

Campus Full time August 2017 United Kingdom Cardiff

The MA in Art and Design programme as a whole is designed for students who wish to develop their academic and research knowledge from within the practical disciplines and wider academic fields of Art and Design. [+]

The MA in Art and Design programme as a whole is designed for students who wish to develop their academic and research knowledge from within the practical disciplines and wider academic fields of Art and Design. In the MA you will submit a written dissertation, and, if wished, a practical piece of work. You choose the balance between these theoretical and practical interests. Typically students might include teachers, aspiring artists, aspiring academics, or recent graduates in Art and/or Design who wish to further their professional practice. The MA encourages you to develop your practice in a critical yet supportive environment. Our aim is to enable you to sustain your practice and to succeed at the highest level. In order to help to work towards this, you will be allocated a personal tutor and subject-specialist member of academic staff. However you will also have access to and guidance from other specialists in each area. We offer our MA in a number of specialist pathways. Specialist Pathways - Art and Science The Art and Science pathway is part of our MA Art and Design programme. It is intended for art and design graduates who wish to develop their practice in a dialogue with scientific enquiry, and for science graduates who wish to explore how art and design theory and practice can inform the visual and aesthetic dimensions of science. It is also intended for graduates from any background who wish to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of the nature of interdisciplinarity. Most importantly, it is designed for graduates who want to wrestle with the practical and philosophical issues which arise when subjects collide, and arrive at an understanding of what it means to fall in between. - Death and Visual Culture This postgraduate programme will analyse representations of death and dying through an investigation of theoretical concepts and debates applied to all aspects of visual culture, including fine art, film, fashion, material culture, photography, television and gaming. Students will be encouraged to analyse case studies in relation to sociological, psychoanalytic and philosophical theoretical disciplines on death. - Ecologies The Ecologies pathway is part of our MA Art and Design programme. It is intended for art and design graduates who wish to develop the ecological dimension of their practice, and for humanities or science graduates who are interested in how ecology, aesthetic experience, and visual practice can challenge and expand one another. It is a research-preparation Masters programme which can be taken either as a theory–practice or a purely theoretical route. - Philosophy The Philosophy pathway is part of our MA Art and Design programme. It is intended for art and design graduates who wish to explore philosophical themes arising from their work, or to develop their practice in response to philosophical ideas and questions. It is also designed for humanities or science graduates who are interested in how thought is affected when it has to confront the demands of aesthetic experience and art and design practice. Most especially, it is intended for graduates who want to confront the tensions between visual theory and practice, and to work through the demands which thinking and aesthetic experience make on each other. The course is a research-preparation programme which can be taken either as a theory–practice or a purely theoretical route. Some familiarity with philosophy is desirable but not essential. [-]
