University of South Dakota Beacom School of Business

Introduction

About the School

The Beacom School of Business at the University of South Dakota has long been known as one of the finest programs of its kind in the region, if not the nation. The School built its credentials on a solid foundation, with roots almost as deep as the University itself.

A pioneer in business education, the School started as a sub-collegiate commerce department in 1887.  As the frontier gradually became more commercialized, the School strived to find its niche, growing into a College of Business in 1892 and a School of Commerce in 1904.  It was finally firmly established as the School of Business Administration in 1927, its place in the University held firm by the increase in commerce and industry at the end of war.  Business education shifted from the old style of educating students in bookkeeping and business arithmetic to courses in marketing, management, finance, accounting and advertising.

Just as business education may have seemed out of place on the prairie in the late 1800's, the Beacom School of Business has always had a tradition of defying expectations.  Its graduates have risen to the top in many industries all over the world, including senior management in all Big Four accounting firms, as well as leadership positions in brokerage houses, premier security and mutual funds institutions, the Federal Reserve, health services and the telecommunications industry.  USD alumni also include e-business entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and small business leaders.

At the USD Business School, you will be taught in small classes by professors, not graduate assistants, most of whom are Ph.D.'s and are experts in their fields.  You will have access to training on the most sophisticated business software on the market.  Our curriculum is state of the art and the School's program is fully accredited.  We will push you hard so you can hit the job market fully prepared.  We place our graduates in great jobs at high rates.

Mission Statement

"We are a community of scholars and practitioners committed to superior undergraduate and graduate business programs accredited by AACSB International.  We emphasize excellence in teaching, promote intellectual exchange and development, and advocate continuous learning reflecting a dynamic global environment.  Our services deliver value to our students, the university, business disciplines, and society."

AACSB Accreditation

The Beacom School of Business, established in 1927, is the only accredited business program in South Dakota, having been continuously accredited since 1949 by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.  Our graduates have become global leaders in such fields as accounting, technology and finance.  The generosity of our alumni and support from other friends of the School allow us to provide scholarships in excess of $200,000 annually to our students.  And it is through such generosity that the Beacom School of Business will have a new building to complement its innovative curriculum.  The building is being designed to embrace emerging trends in business education and to use state-of-the-art technology.  Upon its completion, students will be able to study the most recent business developments in a facility designed for the 21st century, further enhancing an already distinct program.
